Help from the Kettenkrad crowd.
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, July 19, 2004 3:45 PM
I know in the past there were rumblings about the indies in the Dragon Ketten. They look a little formitable due to the size. My question is...Can they be assembled so they are still flexible for paint and installation or is that just a nightmare and should I prepaint and piece together in place?

Just run, throw it as far as you can and run. Big Smile [:D]

Should I pull off a piece of sprue and count to three before I throw it?

ausf, the answers to your questions are: yes and yes.

I read somewhere that with careful assembly, they can be made workable. I glued 5 links together, before I read that, and they definately weren't workable by the time I'd finished with them. But I wasn't trying to be careful, either. They are a formitable undertaking no matter how it's done. When I do mine, I will be using some very sharp, fine pointed tweezers (all the better for those loooong tweezerpults!) and a headband magnifier. At least the runs are short!

Best of luck.

Where have you been, Bill?
So I could conceiveably try assembly, then paint, then mount, then weather?
I already experienced a whole lotta 'pult just playing with 'em. I can see this is going to be a fun one.
New problem, missing sprue 'C' from the box. Gave me an extra of another but I think the front steering wheel is kind of important here. I submitted a claim with DragonCars, I'll see what happens.

Hope you have better luck than I did with Academy. Just got my tracks after 2 months and a week after modifying the ones I had to work.

Hey Ausf, is this Ketten going to have a surly driver and a sheepish Panzer crewman on it?

I would like a Ketten in my collection, but I can see myself going for the Tamiya to save my eye from Exacto damage. You sure do punish yourself......

Going back to your M113A1 thread, my response then and now...........

I told you so!Evil [}:)]

To the rest of you guys. I just thought of a great way to limit tweeserpult losses....... Build the kit inside an old fish tank laid on its side. That way you can see down on what you are doing, your hands are inside the tank and when the PE goes flying, you just use your cyano debonder to get it of the inside of the glass plateBig Smile [:D] - mind you, you would need a big fishtank to do something the size of a MBT with my chunky fingers.

I gets worse: I just ordered a Dragon Borgward B IV. It claims functional indy tracks. Yikes! It's 1/35 with 335 parts and the size of a 1/72 according to a review.

Phroosh,
Sheepish? I been called a lot of things over the years, most unprintable here, but that's a new one. My wife will love it, thanks.

Monrad,

Okay, Ausf. Here I am.

The reason I've been reading the posts pretty regularly, but I haven't been posting because the Firefly is finally getting real close to being finished and posted in the forum, and I was wanting that post to be my 2000th. But I've decided it's just not worth not being able to post! And, it would only be the 2000th until my next post anyway. So, forget it, this will be my 2000th!

Which Kettenkrad do you have? the one with the Pupchen or the one with the field cable? (Not that it matters for the front end!!)

I won't be building mine for quite a while, yet. If you haven't gotten your replacement in when you're getting ready for it, let me know and I'll send my C sprue to you, if you'd like. And, just in case the impossible of probabilities has happened, I'll check mine and see if, perchance, I got two C's!

But this all brings something to mind. I always look at a new kit to see the parts, but I NEVER inventory the sprues to see if I got them all. Something else to add to my "checklist"!

(I've heard that Dragon is pretty responsive, so shouldn't be too long!)

Good luck

That's a very kind offer Bill, I appreciate it. It's appropriate that your 2000th is an offer of help, because it's what you are known for, besides corruption of my finances.Wink [;)].
I'm not at a loss for projects, so I'll see what Dragon has to offer.
It's the Feldkable version which I was to leave off anyhow, but the steering wheel was to be an intricate part of my plans. I thoughly checked both the Tamiya 1/16s and Trumpeter T-34 (they don't have shrink wrap) but usually don't check anything else. I guess I'll start. This particular kit I bought at a LHS, so I would have no problem going back to them if neccesary.

Yup. You're sheepish, and I'm a shrinking violet, we just have trouble showing it.

ausf,

My kit does contain the C fret, so if worse comes to worse, let me know!!

If Dragon doesn't make good and I'm ever pressed to build it, I'll probably just have it belly-up in a crater or breaking through some ice or something.
Thanks again for the offer though.

Ausf,

You can scratch build this no problem. I did it with mine and was very happy with the results. Any detail under the steering damper, where the handlebars attach to the front fork are hidden under the canvas cover that attaches at the headlamp and goes over the handlebars and under the damper knob. The fork is straight forward and can be done easily enough. The front fork has a simple frame work and the wheel can either be the stamped rim or a BMW R75 front tire can be used. They interchanged them in the real thing. In fact there are some out there that operated without the front wheel on. The manuals suggested that over rough terrain the front tire be rmoved as this was really only for extra stability when the ketten was driven on roads at speed.

has a photo of a wheeless ketten as well as a motorcycle front rim in place of the stamped rim.

You may want to submit that to FSM's Readers tips.
