Scale Length for 1/35 Antennas
Posted by wbill76 on Sunday, July 25, 2004 9:59 AM
I picked up some brass rod at my LHS yesterday for making antennas and am curious if anyone has references as to the actual height/length of German and US antennas for WWII era vehicles. Ordinarily it would be guesswork with stretched sprue but I figure if I'm going to use the rod, I should make a decent attempt at getting it right. Big Smile [:D]

On my Tamiya Pz IV ausf D instructions, it says to make it 5cm high. It looked kind of short though.

Tamiya can be a bit problematic with their cm measurements....in the Wirbelwind kit they provided some string for the tow cables and dictated a 14.5 cm length. I duly followed that instruction and cannot possibly duplicate where they say the cable ought to go. Angry [:(!]

5 cm on a radio antenna sounds about right. I know modern antennas are much longer and more of the whip-type vs. a thicker/rigid mast antenna. I'm hoping someone has a reference that specifies the actual length and can do the scale conversion from there if necessary.

I would agree with these conclusions. 5 cm, +/- and couple mm, seems about right for a normal German vehicle antenna. Also, the antenna guard on the side of my PzKpfw IV Ausf G is about 4.9 cm long.

I do have some references on scout vehicles that quote them using 3 meter antennas. These would scale down to about 8.5 cm.

Enjoy your modeling...
