RHPS Treads. UGH!
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 5:35 PM
Has anyone else here built these things? They are nicely cast and go together very well. They are also handsome representations of Sherman treads. But ugh what work! Tongue [:P]

Of course, that's not RHPS's fault. It's the complex nature of Sherman ruber block treads that is the culprit here.

And worse yet, when I test fit them, they fall apart on the kit, which is disconcerting. I just had to test fit them, though, and I'm glad I did, as the recommended length of 79 links was too long by around two links for my kit, the Formations M4A1.

Anyone else out there built these? Any advice on making life easier as I do the other track? [:0]

I've learned my lesson! Kit treads are fine for Shermans from now on! Smile [:)] but pride forces me to finish this task....

Larry, Robert has used those tracks before, I believe. Maybe he can give you some ideas. I really like the Friuls. I didn't have any real problems with them.

Good luck.

Ed, the Friuls were great! (Take a look at my posting of "Finally Almost Finished..." a couple of weeks ago, if you can find it!) It was the kit tracks that were impossible. The ones I had lots of trouble with before that were the Model Kastens for the Panther. And I fought with them until I made them work!

I think he has decided to not post here anymore and has gone on to other things. I get an e-mail from him every once and a while.

I used RHPS track on my Sherman for the group build not to long ago. I don't think I can make thing easier for you, because I've only used them once and I only put one side on the tank. I had the crew working on the othe side.

What I do remember is that 79 links was to long and it took some careful work to get them over the return rollers and keep them together. The biggest headache by far was the cleaning up of all those small parts and some of them had enjector pin marks that I had to carefully hide were they wouldn't be seen.

Overall I was pleased with the way they came out and would use them again.

Once again, a nice piece of modeling there Trevor.

As much as I dislike indys now they still can't be beat for just plain looks. Well worth the effort. Just a painful journey getting there.

Thanks RAF. Did you shorten the link length? I'm going to try 77 instead. Cleaning up the pieces is indeed a pain, but I've found that they go together fairly easily. It's just time consuming more thn anything else.

Sorry to hear about Robert -- he'll be missed.

Yes, I did shorten up the track and if I remember right I think it was 77 links.

Larry: I may be able to help a little. Although I have never used (or seen) RHPS track's,I have done AFV stuart tracks and Academy stuart tracks. I use something called "Liquitape" from Microscale. It is very sticky, and does not harden. It's like Post-it glue, only stronger. By putting a tiny amount on pin's at end of block's, I can test fit-shape tracks without them falling apart. This has worked for me. I hope this help's with your sherman.
