Panther G
Posted by blitzer on Saturday, July 31, 2004 3:29 PM
hello. I just got a Panther G late version(hobby lobby half offCool [8D]) and I was wondering what you guys do to make the ambush scheme. this is going to my best piece yet. My skills with the air brush are getting very good.

what ever you can tell me will help.

thanks, Levi

I've only done one so far. I did the three color scheme like normal, working from light base coat to dark green. I painted my "dots" by hand. It turned out okay, not great, just okay. In Tony Greenland's book "Panzer Modeling" he shows how to do a very late war pattern with scratch made stencils. The book is pretty expensive, but your public library may be able to get a copy for you to peruse.

Hi Levi,
I've only done one as well, but did the same thing as Steve. I thought it came out well.

Levi,
i did a ambush scheme (of sorts) on my Panther G for the group build last winter.
i did a couple different things for my 'dots'
mine were actually more like falling leaves, and if i were to do it again,
i would make them smaller & do more of them
that being said - i did some by putting little triangles of silly putty aon the model after the base coat of dunkelgelb was on. these 'stick on masks' went in sections where the green & red brown were to go. apply them gently so as not to deform them.
i rolled out the silly putty on a sheet of glass w/ an z-acto handle into a thin sheet and then cut it into strips. cutting the strips at angles gave me little (but not little enough i decided later!) triangles. after the other coats are on, you remove them gently w/ a rounded wooden toothpick to reveal the dark yellow beneath.

then i took a 3x5 card and used a new x-acto blade to cut a few triangle holes in it.
cut a single triangle, and then a group of two or 3.
you can then use the red-brown and the green to spray more leaves over the parts
of the tank that are still yellow. it is up to you whether you want to put some green leaves on the red and some red leaves on the green parts.

all that being said, you could paint the tank in the 3 color camo and then
just put the leaves, dots, stripes on w/ a micro-brush (trade name for handy little
tools that your hobby shop should sell).
i did the green stripes on my Pak 40
(see the towed gun GB page http://members.tripod.com/towedgun/builds.html )
w/ a micro brush and was very pleased w/ the result.

on the Tony Greenland book, checck Amazon - some times there are used copies available for much less than a new one. i got mine for 14 or $16!!

Lucky you Levi for getting that kit for half off! I used a number 5 spotter brush to dab my dots on my Panther. I thinned the paint down a bit, 3/1 paint. I was pleased with the results. There are so many different ways to do an ambush scheme. I thought about using other colors on the green and the red brown, but I chickened out. Good luck.

Dots, bars or triangles, take your pick. Apply as stated above. It looks something like this with bars:

I did mine with a microbrush , came out pretty well I think , there are so many ways to do this scheme , some are dots, some bowtie looking things, some are just short lines ( splinters) you name it !

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] for my Homies!!!

SMall brush works well but for the sprayed dots you don't have much choice but to free hand it... You could cut a stencile out of styrene and spray through it to produce the small feathered dots....

I used a single action Paachae H and Silly Putty to paint the rig in my sig...Big Smile [:D]
