Zimmerit question?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, April 21, 2003 2:01 PM
My girlfriend got me a Tamiya Tiger I Mid Production for our anniversary and I have a question about the zimmerit. I usually build A/C and cars (I have built three armor models in 27 years) so my experience and refrence library are slight. Do all of these types of tanks have zimmerit on them? I want the model to be pretty accurate but I don't know if I am up to the task of adding all that zimmerit. I am still in shock after seeing all of those individual tracks.

Thanks in advance.

The mid-pro was the only type that had zimmerit. There was towards the end of the mid-run, zimmerit was nolonger applied, so you can get away with a Tiger without Zimmerit. I would go this route, three tanks in 27 yrs is not a good track record for tackling a zimmerit project. If you were to do zimmerit, may I suggest www.ipmsstokholm.org, a great article can be found on zimmerit applications, do a search under zimmerit.
With all the indivdual tracks, go slow my A/C friend

Thanks for the advice, I will definately go without zimmerit. I saw some PE zimmerit I think I could handle, but I like the looks of tanks without it. I'm glad I can get away without putting zimmerit on the tank. Now I just need to figure out how to weather armor and I'm home free.

Go to the library and look for modelling books...check them out first. There are hundreds of books on how-to -do this and that.

I have read plenty of articles on the application of zimmerit, and I wouldn't mind trying it. But I don't want to screw up on a fairly expensive kit. I'll practice on a swap-meet kit first, if I ever decide to build a tank w/ zimmerit. Thanks for the advice.

I used a nice size peice of styrine from a sign shop, it's cheap and a scrap section they will give you for nothing. Practice on that, not a kit, even a swap meet one. I use plaster, it takes forever to dry, and if I screw-up, wash off and start again. PE zimmerit looks too neat, and phoney...yes I said phoney! Try zimmerit sometime my a/c friend.
