Maus Mystery Matter
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 2, 2004 6:37 PM
I am in the final stages of finishing my Maus and while searching for detail images, I came across this photo:

Does anyone know what the large, cylindrical object with the arm, to the left of the spare fuel tank is? I have lots of Maus photos, but this is the only photo I've seen with this object in it. The kit has welds where this thing was, actually on both sides of the rear hull, but I have no idea what this is. Any guesses?

the Maus is a wooden mock up from an official display at Rastenburg 1943
it wasnt fitted to the real versions of the tank,

It almost looks to me like an updated Feifel Air filter canister???? Or it could be a muffler system of some sort???
Honestly, the pic looks doctored, so whether it was really on the prototype, that is up in the air and probably always will be..

A wooden mock-up would explain a lot of things, like the missing welds, the 6 missing holes on the edges of the turret rear, the missing tail-light assembly and the cheesy looking tracks. Thanks for the heads-up Jon. But I still wonder what it would have been used for and why there are welds at this location. Wasn't there once an idea to put a flame-thrower / s in this beast? Oh well, one less detail to worry about.
