Looks like a neat little program...always amazing what's out there if you know where to look. Going to use it right now and save it off to my thumb drive.

I was planning on doing the same as you, wildwilliam, but my web browser, Safari, refused to cooperate. It wouldn't embed the photos and saving as pdf's was splitting the images. So I was forced to look at other options and with the help of some kind souls on another bulletin board, discovered this gem of a program. Otherwise, I'd still be saving...

Thanks for the welcome. I'm currently an armchair builder, no time, no room, baby on the loose. But someday, "soon," I'll be building again. In the meantime, I'm just amassing research material and planning projects in my mind.

The other benefit I failed to mention about the program is the minimal amount of work involved. Simply enter the web address, tell the application where to save the files and you're done. It does all the work for you while you get a cup of coffee (I'm on a T1 line at work and it took about 20 minutes). No further interaction is required, so you could do this overnight on a dial up connection if need be.

i will have to look into it. sounds like an interesting product.
i have downloaded the pages as archives (mhtm format, i think)
but i don't think any of the links still work.
it is more like having a jpg of the page.
but it should suit my purposes for now anyway.

Been lurking for a while, but I had to post on this one...

There is a REALLY good shareware program that will allow you to make a backup copy of the AFV Interiors site. I'm using a Mac and OSX, but it's also available for Windows. You can download a copy at the following:

What this program does is collect all the photos and art and text for EACH page and saves it into an archive. Once done, you burn a copy of the archive to CD. With this archive, you can use your favorite web browser to look surf AFV Interiors site on your CD drive (or hard drive). All the various sub-pages (Parts 1, 2, 3, 4) work and even the links to other websites such as Nellis AFB. The AFV Interiors site is about 193MB complete, so you'll need a speedy connection.

i made a cd of the pages at work.

but the burner i made it on recorded it at a high speed,
and my older home PC won't read it!

ah the ravings of a lunatic.
as it turns out, my home cd player/burner WILL read it, but NOT the dvd/cd drive.
so i am good to go.

I'm going to my friends computer today and open the CD on a their 'PC' and then on their 'MAC'. If it all still works then I think It's cool.

Hey not to beat this topic to death but if you take my suggestion and synchronize each page then when you clean out your cookies and files you will loose what you synchronized. Just a warning that's what happened to me.

i did see the part abt using Favorites to make the page available offline,
but i did not relish the thought of adding each page of all those vehicles to my list!

i have everything saved but the US & Russia.
which i will start on today.

Here are more tips, including how to make web pages availabel for offline browsing...

To save a Web page on your computer

On the File menu, click Save As.
Double-click the folder you want to save the page in.
In the File name box, type a name for the page.
In the Save as type box, select a file type.

Do one of the following:
To save all of the files needed to display this page, including graphics, frames, and style sheets, click Web Page, complete. This option saves each file in its original format.

To save all of the information needed to display this page in a single MIME-encoded file, click Web Archive. This option saves a snapshot of the current Web page. This option is available only if you have installed Outlook Express 5 or later.

To save just the current HTML page, click Web Page, HTML only. This option saves the information on the Web page, but it does not save the graphics, sounds, or other files.

To save just the text from the current Web page, click Text Only. This option saves the information on the Web page in straight text format.
Notes

With Web Page, complete and Web Archive, you can view all of the Web page offline, without adding the page to your Favorites list and marking it for offline viewing.

Making pages available for offline viewing

When you make a Web page available offline, you can read its content when your computer is not connected to the Internet. For example, you can view Web pages on your laptop computer when you don't have a network or Internet connection. Or you can read Web pages at home without tying up a phone line.

You can specify how much content you want available, such as just a page, or a page and all its links, and choose how you want to update that content on your computer.

If you just want to view a Web page offline, and you don't need to update the content, you can save the page on your computer. There are several ways you can save the Web page, from just saving the text to saving all of the images and text needed to display that page as it appears on the Web.


To make the current Web page available offline

On the Favorites menu, click Add to Favorites.
Select the Make available offline check box.
To specify a schedule for updating that page, and how much content to download, click Customize.
Follow the instructions on your screen.

i cannot find where to set the 'make page aailable offline' that you mention.
don't know if it is a function of my OS or the Internet Exploder browser.

EDIT - ok -- i got it. if i save it as a web archive i get it all.

it would definitely be illegal to sell.
probably could be given away.
tho even that would likely violate the letter of the 'personal use' stricture on the site.

This is a great site and will be sorely missed. If someone has this site on Cd I sure would like to buy a copy. That may be a way to keep the site up and running. Anyway, if there is a copy available please email me @ tedman111@adelphia.net.

The other option is to "Select All" from the Edit key for each page and copy. They paste it into a word document. Then save it to your HD or a CD.

Here's what I did, I followed Dwight's suggestion but make sure you check "make page available offline" then I had to click on each link of the web page then after you get a new page click on tools then synchronize. That copies each page link to your local drive so you can view the web page offline. Hope you can follow that.

i was going to make a cd of the pages for personal use,
but i cannot get the pics to download in the manner Dwight advised.
they just don't seem to copy to that directory.

I wrote to the site owner about mirroring, but he says the right to the material on the site would make a mirror too complicated. Oh well.

i followed your tip above, and set up folders for the different nations,
and within each a folder for the vehicles.
the 'save as' function created new subfolders for each page,
(like stug1_files, stug2_files, etc)
where i thought that the image files would go.
but after i was done, the new folders were empty!
the images did not copy to them, even tho when i was saving,
it looked like they were !!

so now if i look at the page on my PC, i get the dreaded red x for each pic.
any ideas?

i have never seen this site before, sad that it wont be around for much longer. i might be able to help out with the web site, i have some experiance with dream weaver (a program used to create web sites) it is what i used to build my bf1942 mod site, teh free site i used has no banners and no pop ups until u leave the site, and then a pop up comes up behind the internet one advertiseing the free site page. you can see my site at the bottom of my post next to profile. the great thing about dream weaver is that you can make it in text, and woziwig (sp? basicly you can see what you are doing).
