Tow rope/chains on AFV
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 12:44 PM
Any one know of a good "around the house" product to use for the tow chains on AFV. In the past I have used pictur hanging wire.

Dragons Tiger 2 Henschel turret comes with thread or rope. How accurate?

I work in surgery at a hospitasl and have access to some old thread fairly thick but I don't know if this is to scale.

Tow cables were more common than chains on most tanks. Any multi-strand thread with minimal roughness will work fine. The diameter should be about 1/16" for heavy vehicles like the King Tiger and work down to about 1/64" for light tanks/vehicles.

If you want to go with tow chains, some types of cheap jewelry chain make excellent scale tow chain. You can pick up bulk jewelry chain from many arts and crafts or hobby stores.

Enjoy your modeling...

I cut the loops of the kit supplied tow cables, drill out the ends and insert 3 strands of .020'" diameter solder twisted together. Rake an X-acto saw blade down the length of the cable several times to produce the appearance of multi-stranded cable. Paint with steel paint, black wash and rust pastels. These are very malleable and can be positioned exactly as desired.

Sorry guys, meant to say to ropes.

Does the picture hanging wire sond good? Or to thick to scale.

Say for instance on TIger 2 or T 34/76.

If it's the diameter I'm used to seeing, picture wire could work for rope. 1/2"diameter rope scales down to about 1/64" diameter and 1" rope would be about 1/32" diameter. You can work out various diameters from there.
