Instead of painting the rubber on the road wheels. paint with the base colour and then draw in the black with a sharpie marker (much quicker) after it's dried hit it with a coat of dull spray. A tip I picked up in a book that works great. Have fun building your tigerBig Smile [:D]

Good luck on the tracks. You'll need it. I built a similar Revell tank kit with those tiny treads. When djmodels1999 says slowly, he really means it. Lets say it's a good thing that the kit wasn't expensive. Sign - Oops [#oops]. Good luck!

I havent got it yet, I get a kit every 2 weeks because of money right now. Currently I ordered online Tamiya's P-51D with ALL the goodies, lets just say the whole thing came out to $150 and the kit is only $30 of that, for the Mustang Ranch Build. I also got Monogram's P-51D to work out some stuff for the other bird, $10 testbed Approve [^].
I saw Tamiya's 1/16 Kubelwagon at my LHS and that might be one to get too but its price was.... high. On further inspection of the tank I was talking about it was Tamiya's Tiger early (I think) in the black box... looks kinda fancy and all... has PE Zimm not resin and other stuff. Also they had Tamiya's Tiger with aluminim (sp) tracks and barrel and other stuff that was kinda pricy too, and finally tamiya's Challenger, I really like the look of that tank. So there is my early list.....
DARN YOU DARKSIDE GUYS!!!!.... *shakes fist in the air*

Shrikes,

It is a shame for me to be late on this one. But I can see that the guys took good care of you.

Anyway for colors available in our area:

Panzer Grey - Tamiya German Grey (just need to tone down a little bit)
Dark Yellow - Tamiya Dark Yellow
Dust coat - Tamiya Buff

You will enjoy building it.. that I am sure of.

What kit did you get Jeff? Has to be one or the other.

See, Joe sees the Dark Side now. Cool [8D]

Domi offers some wise advice. I've never done Braille scale, but there are some wise owls here for sure. Good luck on the build.

Welcome to the darkside!

Soon you will migrate to the 1/35...then perhaps 1/16....and if you really let go of your anger and hatred, the penultimate 1/6 awaits you. Big Smile [:D]

Shrikes,
German grey is good, tho some think it is 'too dark'
and i suppose a desrt vehicle might fade?
(not sure how the German paint held up in those conditions.)
XF-53 (Neutral Grey) is also a popular choice.
either is fine.
the color police are unlikely to break down your door and haul you off!

Hi ya,

As an ex military pilot who loved airplanes, I too have been taken over by the dark side. Looks like your 1/72 scale tank is about the same size as looking at an T-55 through my hud from about 2000 feet! Rock and roll buddy.

Keep the blue side up and the pointy end forward!

I just went over the kit and i just need to say that the number of tiny wheels and tiny tracks is dizzying!

you guys must be gluttons for punishment! Tongue [:P]

Okay, i think I'll go with Tamiya's German Grey... Seems close enough. But what color should i use for the "dust coat"? Pardon all the questions, I'm new at this tank business. Big Smile [:D]

Shrikes,
check this thread for som DAK (Deutches Afrika Korps) links.
they should clear up the colors.
i believe they started w/ grey vehicles and thn moved to the dunkelgelb (dark yellow)
http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25000

i think by dust coat, he means a light spray of dirt colored paint to
dirty up the running gear.

Hmmm... Build a Tiger in a Day... I'll see what i can do. I'll be in the mountains on Sunday because my Family will be on holiday, so I'm afraid i can't join you on that exact date. If it's okay with ausf, i can build it on Monday instead. After all Monday morning here is Sunday Evening in the US! hehehe... Big Smile [:D]

Okay... I'm having a heck of a time believing the instructions... The paint scheme i want to use is the one of Panzer Company 501, Tebourba, Tunisia, December 1942. It says the over all color is "Staubgrau"... It's GRAY??? in the desert?? What's the closest Tamiya Color for this? Dark Gray, maybe?

Also, Zokissima: What's a dust coat??

"another one bites the dust"
hehe, j/k. Welecome to the darkside. I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay.

I don't do any work in 1/72 armor, but I assume some basic policies as 1/35 would apply. I build everything in modules, then paint everything, then assemble the major portions. The wheels I NEVER place unpainted on the model, but rather paint them on the sprue, clip off, and touch up. The other two main sections are the hull, and of course the turret. Build each one into a separate sub-assembly, then paint them all at once, and when dry, place together. After that paint and mount the wheels, then assemble the links. I paint the tracks off the tank as well. Wash and drybrush everything, then mount the tracks. After that, if you have an airbrush, a light dustcoat on the lower portions of the vehicle should be enough to finish it off.
Have fun!

Shrikes,
welcome to the Dark Side!

i do spray the hull before i put the wheels on so i don't get bare plastic hiding in the wheels' "shadow".

hey, you would not want to join the clinically insane and try to build that
Tiger in a day, would you Question [?]
look for Ausf's "Mad Tiger Day" thread.
heck - i'll make it easy for you - links to the threads are in this post!

a bunch of us are going to build 1/72 Tigers on August the 8th.
and only August the 8th!
so your new kit would be perfect! Big Smile [:D]

Unless you want a pristine condition right out of the factory tank, I would not worry too much about the wheels. Glue them all, let them dry well, then slowly add individual track links half-way around the drive sprocket (the spiky wheel), moving on to larger sections under the tank, on the the idler (the last wheel) then over the wheels to complete it. When I say slowly, I mean add a few links in any session, then let dry before adding yet more!.

Paint everything with the base colour, add the camo if any, then paint the rubberised edges of the wheels with a thick dark grey wash before painting the tracks. Mud, dust will cover the parts you can't reach!

Have fun!

I bought i target tank. Big Smile [:D]

I got this one today at my LHS for the Backwards Group Build (you know, where wingwipers build tanks and mudmovers build planes).

Strangely I can't wait to get started on it! Though, I'm not looking forward to painting all the little wheels. Any advice for me? When putting together a plane, i paint a little then build a little, paint some more, then assemble that, then mask the clear bits and paint that, etc..... you would you fellas recomend doing the same thing? I ask because i see a few people who build first and paint later (inconceveable!). Big Smile [:D]

Also, how do you guys get it good and dirty? Cool [8D]
