HeavyA,

I agree, I think twice the cost of the kit price is a fair price to charge,

Personally, if you can make the odd buck along the way, then why not,

I have built lots of models on commission for people , mostly as farewell gifts for commanders and soldiers that they have served with. Military pople love to see the vehicle they served on in miniature. I personally don't think e-bay is the way top sell built models, most people charge too much, and you really don't know the quality of the kit. I don't really advertise, just word of mouth.

Here is what I use as a pricing guide. Basic, OOTB kit build is twice the kit price. Added extras or conversions go up from there. I charge $5 per figure added as well for basic plastic figure, resin figure is again caost of figure x 2. I include a wooden base with groundwork for display. Diorama type displays are more as well.

I don't agree with the so called "Masters" who charge rediculous amounts for their works, as shown in the above post. In the end, it is only a plastic model, there are many more out there that others can build as well.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the forums! Don't worry about hanging out here late at night, it's a common thing actually. (My excuse is jetlag...spent a week on the other side of the world and now that I'm back home, my body doesn't know what time it is yet... Big Smile [:D])

ive sold some unbuilts, and im building a custom for a friend (i got a kit in return, so no dollar profit). i might sell some later if i absolutely have too. but only if i go totally broke or have any sort of accident (hospital stays, etc.....). well, i should really be in bed now, so later.

Good for you Sgt Gentry for seeing the light of the Dark Side. I too started out building WW II aircraft as a wee lad, now I'm rolling thunder.

When I start to finish some more stuff, I will be giving away certain things. I don't have the room to store them, and I am not settled in one place yet. Don't think I would sell them, though. Would build something for someone if the asked, but only at cost.

I have given stuff away as well, but have never sold my works. The joy for me is building the thing and hearing people tell me what a tallented SOB I am, or question me as to why there is a big finger print in the paint. ROFLMAO! After they are completed, they are just dust catchers and are on dead mans row just waiting to be broken and ultimatly thrown away.

Tigerman, I used to build exclusively 1/48 scale WWII American airplanes. After being abducted and sent to the middle east, I find modern armor much more exciting. Reference material is just so darn easy to come by here, and there are so many diorama ideas that I have seen that I will be able to stay busy for the rest of my life and never fully develop all of my memories.

$450 USD with a building error admitted by the builder...wonder what his asking price would be without that minor little flaw....Shock [:O]

Mike, it's always nice to see another wingnut convert to the Dark Side. What did you primarily build: WWII or Jets?

It would be interesting to see which side, the Light or the Dark, has the most new recruits so to speak. I can think of many that have come over to the Dark Side since I've joined.

I do know of certain "master" modellers who do work for museums, custom builds, etc. for those who want a finished product for display or commeoration, etc. I've never done it (mostly for the reason I stated above but also because I don't really think anyone would pay for my work! Tongue [:P] ). They make a nice amount off doing it, but have pretty established clients as their base.

Everything I've ever built, I've given away. Seems I'm a sucker for compliments? Of course I've still got all the ones that no one has flattered me on! I do have to say, most of my give aways have been aircraft. I've kind of moved over to the darkside in the past few years. semper fi, mike

LOL. I mean who would pay for it. Still I did it myself and unless it was an obscene amount of money, I wouldn't do it.

Built or unbuilt?

I've built kits for friends at cost but never for profit. It would kind of destroy the "hobby" aspect and move it more towards the "work" category for me.

has anyone ever had success in selling on any of their tanks/models, perhaps using e-bay, or other meduim?
