Karaya makes a small but growing range of tow cables out of soft brass wire and resin ends. The German cables even have the correct number of strands and left hand twist. They are a bit pricey but for purist you can't get much better...

I make my own by twisting 4 strands in a drill and then making the couplers from lead foil and tape.

My My 2 cents [2c] worth. I just use picture hanging wire that you find at Walmart etc. it comes in various thicknesses so you can get the right one. Cut off the eyelet from the kit, drill hole then CA glue in.

Hudson & Allen Studios makes metal tow cables for German, American and British vehichles. I used one on a Panther I did and loved it. Did not use the metal ends though since I had nothing to drill them out. Instead used the kit ones and the metal cable. They also have a metal tow chain with hooks.
