Finished Dragon 1/72 Sturmtiger
Posted by Chief on Saturday, August 7, 2004 9:54 PM
Finished this earlier today. My first airbrushed camo... and the first time I used Vallejo acrylics. I added papertowel zimmerit, replaced the grab-handles with wire, and added a ammo lift cable from thread and paper for the strap. I also added a tow cable made from string and spares box ends. Really enjoyed putting this together. I think I'm gonna have to pick up their Marine amphibious track.

Looks good. I'm working on the Dragon AAV7A1 right now. Big seam that runs the entire circumference of the hull that is difficult to deal with since it is diecast. Of course all you sanding doesn't hurt the detail.

Papertowel zimmerit? Unreal. How does that work? I like the job you did Chief. Welcome to the foums.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] I'm also curious about the papertowel zim, I assume you did it with wet papertowels but how exactly?

Very nice finish, looks great especially in 1/72! Thumbs Up [tup]

Man this really has me curious...I'm thinking one of two possibilities for "papertowel" zim. Either the papertowel was used to make the imprint or the papertowel itself is the zim. 1-ply papertowels are pretty thin and if applied with alcohol or water, would adhere pretty good and snug down similar to what I can see in the photos. Seal with a laquer and then overpaint, it could probably work.

Help us out chief! Tell us the secret to this thing called "papertowel" zim...Big Smile [:D]

Sorry didn't mean to have you all wondering. The papertowel zimmerit is in fact the edge of a napkin...like you'd find in a fastfood joint. Many of these napkins have an embossed edge that is pretty close to 1/72 zimmerit in appearance. I simply trimmed a section to fit.... layed it onto the kit with liquid cement. Then once I was satisfied with the position... I soaked it with liquid CA. That bonded it tight to the kit. Then I just handle and paint like usual...

Pretty simple really...it was a technique that I read in an FSM in the late 80's early 90's I'd guess.... I have them going back to about issue #3 or #4....
