I always paint the model and camo it first. I add the tools just before I chi and weather it. I have a nasty habit of bumping off parts I glued on, so the less time they are on the better

I add all the tools and paint them after I have painted the tank. I used to paint the tools while they were still on the sprue, but I always screwed up the tanks paint with glue spots when I tried to put the tools on the kit.

Same with me. In fact this may sound wierd or wasteful, but I never really use modeling glue any more. For every single thing I build I use super glue (except for indy treads-tam extra thin). No doubt whatever technique or seqence you guys use, we all turn out great models anyway, so I guess it's just preference...

My standard method:

Build the hull and turret with all the surface details like grab handles, hatches, etc. but leave off the tools, spare tracks, etc.

Pre-shade with either Flat Black or MM Rust depending on the subject.

Paint basecoat.

Apply camo.

Build/apply tracks. (Kits with skirts or schurzen may require a doing this sooner)

Add any scratching/dings.

Apply glosscoat and decals.

Detail tools and match the attachment hooks color to the camo pattern where they attach.

Apply dull coat.

Apply weathering and voila!

That is my preferred method. I'd hate to paint a tool or something small and get silver or something all over the camo.

I use superglue for the items added back onto the vehicle. I have never had a problem with them coming off and I don't scrape away any paint. I think it gives a cleaner finish by painting the tools, etc separate from the vehicle and adding them back later.

I pretty much build the whole thing, details and tracks (if non-workable links) included, then paint. I hate trying to scrape off paint to glue stuff on.
If it's a vehicle with skirts, I'll paint the suspension, tracks, and lower hull first, then finish the build, then finish the finish.

I affix most, if not all, of the tools before painting and detail paint them later.

I usually build it all unless something will get in the way. Like a jack or something thats up against another surface. I'll leave it off so I can paint behind it. Otherwise glue it all on and paint it later. I dis-like having to scrape away paint to glue on a part.... But thats just me...

When AFV comes in for overhaul, do the painters remove the loose items or just paint over them?

I total build a tank, I have only done 1/35 scale so far, and it seems to allow
for a complete build then paint quite well,

Once built, I pre-shade with flatt black the whole tank, then the base colour, camo next, then detail tools + decals,

then weather

job done

I am building a Messerschmitt 109 at mo, & finding that I am having to paint in sections, cos of the cockpit detail etc,

I just wanted to know what's you order of painting tools on the tanks. Do you build the model and put everything on except the tools and paint it and then put on the pre-painted tools after? Or do you put the tools on with everything and just paint it all and detail the tools after basecoat? I put the tools and cables on the model after the basecoat and camo, just because it's hard to spray camo around tools glued on, but I guess with 1/72 you kind of don't have an option. just wondering... Smile [:)]
