Rules on figures in tanks in model competitions ?
Posted by spector822002 on Thursday, August 12, 2004 8:46 PM
Are figures allowed in vehicles in model competitions or does that put the model in the diorama category ? Also what are the rules for bases , and how elaborate are they allowed to be in most cases ?

Contest rules can vary, but if it's an IPMS contest, those rules are posted on their website. Generally speaking a base is ok for a model to not be classed as a diorama so long as there isn't another vehicle and it obviously isn't a diorama. In regards to figures, usually 1 figure is allowed. Any more than that and you are pushing the limits from my experience.

Rules vary though, always a good idea to check with the contest regulators first. If you enter a kit in a category and it's deemed to belong in a different one, they usually will move it automatically as opposed to denying you outright.

I typed out the entire IPMS rule...then my computer locked up!!!

In a nutshell,

You can put the tank on a simple base that can simulate the natural ground (only) on which the tank is located and you can use all normal crew figures for that vehicle and the entry will be judged as a vehicle. Bases cannot be oversized and must be proportionate to the model. You can also use any non-terrain type bases that are simple and proportionate in size to the model. These can include, but are not limited to, mirrors, wood, or plastic.

The inclusion of any figures other than the normal crew for the primary vehicle, any foliage, or equipment not attached to the vehicle (support equipment, oil drums, etc) will make it a diorama.

As wbill76 said, non-IPMS contest rules will vary, so check with the Contest Director in advance to see what their rules are.

Hope this helps...

My two cents. A diorama is a caption of something going on, a base is kinda like the vehicle is parked and the figures in the tanks are taking a breathe of fresh air, If you have a tank that visibly looks like it is going down a road or path, then it is a diorama. At least i don't have to worry about this in the Juniors Category. Tongue [:P]
