New to Armour...
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, August 15, 2004 12:37 PM
Can anyone suggest a kit to me? I've only built the 1/72 dragon m1 abrams.. I have been building aircraft for about 6 years, and want to start armour. Can anyone suggest good kits I could start on? Thanks

Are you looking only into 1/72 or maybe 1/35? Since I only build 1/35 I have a few intro kits that the forum tends to recommend to newbies. Tamiya's Panzer II with it's montone color and rubberband tracks and affordable price is always listed as is their T-34 kits. I have built the T-34/42 and T-34/43. Easy builds, no fancy camo paint job. Most of any of Tamiya's kit work well for beginners. The Walker Bulldog is often mentioned, again one color etc. I think their Sherman kits are very easy to build and again one color and rubberband tracks. You may want to steer clear of Dragon kits until you get your feet wet with a few builds. They are nicely detailed, but come with indy tracks that tend to scare some modelers off.

1337,
If you are wanting to do 1/35 scale, I would recommend the Tamiya King Tiger.. It is a VERY easy kit to build, goes together very smoothly and makes a very fine piece.. Dragon is just as good, but more complicated and I wouldn't recommend them for a newbie..
If you are wanting to stay in 1/72, I would recommend the NEW Dragon King Tiger w/ Henschel turret. It is reworked and doesn't have the difficult to assemble metal hulls.
Good luck and enjoy..

I'd go more for the "glutton for punishment"..lolTongue [:P]

Seriously, there is nothing wrong with DML/Dragon kits.. The newer kits are GREAT and in some cases even better than the Tamiya kits.. But I certainly wouldn't recommend them for someone just starting armor..Wink [;)]Blush [:I]

Just think joe, you are gaining valueable experience tackling difficult subjects up front! It means you will have a lot less fear for later projects or drive you mad one of the two! Big Smile [:D]

Welcome to the darkside! My advice really and truly is pick a subject that interests you in the armor arena and that look for different kits/reviews and make a determination based off their different features as to what you want to tackle. As already mentioned, indy tracks can be challenging depending and might be something you want to avoid at first or not. Some like joe and woodbeck tackled them on their first armor kit and their results worked out just fine.

Welcome to the Darkside, 1337.

You can't go wrong with a Tamiya Tiger I.

Good luck and enjoy building your tank.
