King Tiger Turret interior.
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 7:46 AM
Anyone got any pics of the inside of a King Tiger Turret?

I don't want to go overboard, but I am building DML Porsche version, and would like the hatches open, but with fellas in em, so I have a little bit of space to fill.
Some general info on ammo racks would be nice, as I assume most of the turret would be filled by these, my Tiger in Action book says there was room for 22 rounds. Perhaps they are similar to a Tiger1's?

Whilst I am being demanding, any rear view pics of a King w/ zimmerit would be nice too!Blush [:I]

Thanks

I'd wish I had a scaner Matt, but I don't. I have some good pics in one of my books, but I don't know of any pics online. Sorry. Get Thomas L. Jentz's book on the KT and you will find plenty of info there.

phroosh, here's a pic I took of the interior of a King Tiger's turret when I was in Munster last year.

Notice how the thingamabob connects to the whoozits, and the berkeley-hunt is right below the who's-your-aunt-Fred. I found this to be a fascinating example of masterful Teutonic engineering.

Hope this helps! Smile [:)]

Hehehe, good one Larry. But it just so happens that I have an inside connection in Munster, I know one who works there as a voulanteer, and he told me that if I wanted to I could be allowed to go inside the King Tiger and take some pics, but all the hatches are welded shut so the only way in is through the escape hatch in the bottom of the tank, and Im 175 cm and 80 kilos and there is NO WAY I'll get through that hatch.

Exactly.

I'm an American. I have no idea what any of that means. Laugh [(-D]

When I was a kid, in the 70's, we were told by our teachers one day that we were going to join the world and go over to the metric system. Yeah right. It's almost like your teacher coming in and telling you that America is going to start phasing in Mandarin as the official language, so let's get started learning it, shall we?

The metric system has hardly broken the surface here, though most people by now know roughly what a liter of milk is. So, what size are you compared to a liter of milk, Monrad?

Well, you know what they say about German tank design being over-complicated. If something broke, they just rolled their eyes, threw their hands up, got out of the tank and surrendered.

By the way, this was chassis number 30459697. All following chasses had a more streamlined design -- the stuff was painted silver instead of gold.

Oh come on, Monrad, I'm 6 feet tall and weight 235 pounds -- come with me on the magic carpet ride through the escape hatch ...

It's really quite simple. First, dislocate all of your joints ....

I've always wondered about the logic of having bottom hull escape hatches...I guess if the tank overturns it would come in handy but otherwise they would be kind of difficult to use in a hurry I would think...

At 175 lbs and 5'9" you would be an ideal size for a Panzer crewman, especially on the roomy KT, so I say go for it! Of course, no telling what the air is like inside that beast if the hatches have been welded shut for any length of time...still, the photos would be an awesome thing, take one for the team! Thumbs Up [tup] Clown [:o)]

Come on Monrad, get in the game.Wink [;)] How long can you hold your breath?
I'm about the same size, an inch taller maybe and I get myself in and out of trouble all the time. Phroosh needs you. We all need you.

Why are you guys making all these silly comments when phroosh and I were trying to have a serious conversation about King Tiger chassis number 3496948596?

Is everything a joke with you people? (Lifts clown hat from his head to scratch it in confusion and dismay.)

Anyway ... Tongue [:P]

The Osprey "New Vanguard" book has a cut-away illustration of a serien-turm KT -- and actually, some photos of interior kits might be helpful to look at. There may be some other shots of a KT's turret interior in the Osprey book as well. I'll take a look tonight.

Oh, almost forgot -- the KT at the Patton museum has a cutaway with plate glass, and you can look in the turret. They actually have a virtual musem tour, with a pan and scan video of the whole place, on their website. It's fun to play with, and all-round nifty. I don't know how close the pan and scan gets to the KT interior, though. Url:

Hehehe, if someone pays your ticket I'll tell Jenz Jôrn Dzingel ( My contact in Munster ) that you are coming, and he'll get the escape hatch opened for you. Oh and btw, do NOT ware your best clothes.

Thanks for the links and the ongoing help everyone, I had trouble with the links, but that may be a problem my end. I'll keep my eye out for that book Monrad, and I'd love to see any of those photos, Kenneth and Dave.

I am 5'11" and around 143lb's so perhaps I should save for an airfare; they could roll me up and poke me down the barrel!

I got those links to work, and have found some useful stuff, thanks again.

Let's see, Monrad, Larry, Claymore, me.... one more and we have a crew. In through the magical hatch, and then we can drive that thing straight to Mexico!

Ausf could be the 5th crew member, or the 5th element Big Smile [:D]. I thought we were going in through the barrel, I almost think that it would be easier than going in through the hatch. I think they put that small hatch in the bottom of the tank to force the crew to stay and fight.

Oh and btw, the tank has no engine, so we need like 100 more to push it to Mexico.

I have absolutely no military experience, so of course I should be the commander. Captain [4:-)]

I'll be the Funk operator. Although if it's been closed up for so long, we'll all be in the Funk.

Here, I'll rehearse: 'There's five men men trapped in a smelly King Tiger, please send help!.... If you can't send help, send five women!'

Did I pass the audition?

You may be on to something there monrad about the hatch. I can just picture the designers:

Designer1: We are building this intricately engineered massive armored beast, what about the crew?
Designer2: The usual access will suffice.
Designer1: And if they need to escape the vehicle in an emergency?
Designer2: We'll cut this 1/2 scale hatch in the bottom and tell them it's their "escape" hatch. Once they are inside, it's too late for them to notice. They will have no choice but to fight it out.
Designer1: You mean their only way in or out if all the hatches are welded shut is to crawl down the barrel?
Designer2: You catch on quickly my friend...

Yep, you did. So comander and radio operator is taken. I want to be the driver then, oh on second thoughts there is no engine, so I'll be the gunner then, arhhh the gun doesn't work either. ok driver will be fine atleast I'll have the best seat.
Are you sure you want to be the comander Larry ?? I mean the hatches are welded shut so you can't stick your head out for a breath of fresh air.
This is getting funky.

I don't think the headsets work either.
