Armor Library
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 3:29 PM
As an old armor modeler that sold everything to become a ship modeler and then sold everything to become an armor modeler.....again, my library is a bit skinny. Putting money aside, what 1 book would you recommend. Or is it a matter of buying the reference after you decide what you want to build? (Chicken and egg thing). While ship modeling I spent a small fortune on old and antique books, luckily I made a few dollars when I sold them, but now I need a new library. Please let me know what you think.

Well, for a general armor builder, Kalmbach's Shep Paine book Modeling Tanks and Military Vehicles is a pretty good book that is still relatively inexpensive ($14). Other books depend on your tastes. If you like Shermans or Tigers, then MMiR's Modelers Guide to the M4 Sherman or Modelers Guide to the Tiger Tank are the best books for the Sherman or Tiger fan.

I just saw the Modeler's Guide to the Tiger (I assume the same one Rob mentioned) in the LHS today, and it looks an outstanding reference. If not for the price, $40.00 Cdn, I would have picked it up on the spot.

Just what did I spell wrong? BTW you could use some capitalization, punctuation and sentence structure refreshers yourself.

Ted,

If you could only get one reference book, pick up "The Encyclopedia of Tanks and Armored Fighting Vehicles" published by Thunder Bay Press. It is 544 pages long, 9" x 11 1/2", and lists more than 900 AFV's from every country made between 1915 and 2002. It doesn't cover every varient of every AFV, but it has every base model covered pretty well.

Enjoy your modeling...
