Zimmerit-question...
Posted by DanCooper on Monday, September 6, 2004 9:59 AM
Hi, as can be deducted from my forum-name, I'm mostly an A/C builder (please, don't throw me out right now...) and I have a simple question.

Did all King Tiger tanks have Zimmerit applied ???

The reason that I ask is that, dis week I'll have a lot of time on my hands at my work, and I bought a Dragon King Tiger with Porshe Turret to take to my work and do some modeling there. (I can't take along my airbrush equipement so that why picked up an armored vehicle)

Welcome DC, as far as I know all Porsche turret king tigers had zimmerit, but as with most things about German WWII armor there are almost always exceptions. I'm sure one the tiger experts will be along soon to give you a more definite answer.

All Porsche turreted Tiger IIs, with the exception of the first 3 Versuchs-Serie (trial-series) had Zimmerit. (The Bovington Porsche Tiger II is Fgst.Nr.V2, hence it has no Zimmerit.) All Henschel turreted Tiger IIs produced up to September 9th, 1944 had Zimmerit. All Henschel turreted models produced after Sept. 9th did not have Zimmerit or the base coat of Dunkelgelb applied. The camouflage of Dunkelgelb and Olivgruen was sprayed sparingly onto the red oxide primer on these vehicles.

What does Bovington mean? I knew there was a Bovington Tiger but didn't know there was a Bovington Tiger II. What does it mean?

Sorry for the shorthand description. Preserved vehicles in museums are commonly refered to in shorthand as the name of the museum followed by the vehicle name. Hence the Bovington Porsche Tiger II is the Porsche turreted Tiger II preserved at the Bovington Armor Museum in England.

Does anybody know where I can find some online pictures from one of those King Tigers, I know that there a few different "patterns" of Zimmerit.

Man you can see that I don't know anything about tanks do you ? Now if it had wings that would have been something else Big Smile [:D]
