Hornisse finished (Pix)
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, September 11, 2004 12:24 AM
Hi everyone.

After a long hiatus, I've finally got back to finishing my Hornisse kit (DML 6165 Nashorn early version). Kit was built OOB, everything handpainted. The camo scheme is a bit 'non-standard' but I found the kubinka nashorn scheme to be wacky enough to try out. The white that you see in the images are intentional - they're supposed to be leftovers of winterwash. Camo-netting made from no-name brand cheesecloth. The real screw-up that I did was in forgetting to model track sag when I was putting the indy tracks together - next time for sure. I bought the DML SPG crew but I'm not yet ready to tackle figures - maybe later on when I get more confidence.

Constructive criticism definitely welcome.

Cheers y'all.

That is Sweat!!!!!!! The dirt and mud on the chassis is awsome! The leftove whitewash is a great Idea! The camo, whitewash idea, camo netting and mud make it a very unique model, in a good way! Great job!Big Smile [:D]Approve [^]

Ex,
good looking Rhino!
i like the different camo, and the left-over white wash is a neat effect.
glad you got back to this one and got it done.

get some practice in, and then get that crew in there!

Good job, Ex.

I've got to agree with those above...the camo is excellent.

Enjoy your modeling...

Great results with handpainting. I would love to see what you could do with an airbrush.
The only criticism I have is the whitewash would wear from the edges first and be left in the lower areas and crevices. Cool idea, that always adds to the build.

Just a first class job of workmanship, and what can be accomplished from just out of the box. I really like everything you achieved with this project. Thank you for sharing with us. semper fi, mike

Nice job on that Kubinka scheme...I've been eying it before wondering how it would look on a finished kit and you replicated it very nicely! The cheesecloth and weathering make this one look like it's seen some action. Are you planning a base for it?

Thanks for sharing!

It's nice to see something different for once. Like the other comments, I like the things you have done.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

wbill: I took the challenge of the kubinka nashorn camo pattern because it's largely discredited as an 'authentic' scheme because it looks so wacky when you take a look at the kubinka nashorn. But having done it up, I wouldn't think the short stripey pattern would really be a liability in the field. As for a base, I guess if I do the figures, I would really need a base because it shows them re-arming the vehicle (and hence off the vehicle)

ausf: I'll keep that procedural point in mind next time I play with winterwash - thanks.

Speaking of bases - is there any on-line tutorial for bases? Like typical procedures for set-up, creating grass, dirt etc. I have no idea how grass would be made. Heck, I don't even know how dirt would be made. Suggestions welcome.
