Alternative History GB, part.1: "What if..."
Posted by djmodels1999 on Sunday, September 12, 2004 7:17 AM
Swanny's depiction of a J7W2 Shinden gave me the idea to propose a series of Group Builds dedicated to 'Alternative History'.

(BTW, sorry to post an aircraft in here but it was a good example!)

I'm talking about a very loose GB here, stretching over a whole year maybe, so that people can join in as and when it pleases them, possibly after having been 'stimulated' by other 'what if' models posted here...

I'd like to propose a first Alternative History GB dedicated to 'What if the A-bombs had not been used over Japan'. This opens up a whole lot of possible scenarii, such as, of course, a landing or a series of landings by US/Allied forces in Japan, but also such as a Soviet invasion of Japan, a possible conflict between Allied and Soviet forces and the like.

Imagine J7W2 vs B-29, IS-3 vs M-18, P-80 vs Yak-15, but also the advanced introduction of many other weapon systems, some cancelled by the end of WWII others taking a bit more time to evolve and become operational: B-49 Flying Wing, Nuclear subs, MiG-15,....

Anyone else interested? This one would be organised over 2005.Tongue [:P]

I already have a "What if..." kit that I built some time ago. It is an old Airfix Tirpitz that I "updated" to modern standards, including the addition of a helicopter deck and a Sea King ASW helicopter. It is kind of crude by my standards today, but it looks 'believable' according to several Navy personnel who've seen it. My story behind it was that it hadn't been sunk, but taken in by Britain after WWII and preserved. Then, when West Germany joined NATO, the British gave it back as a start to a new West German Navy.

I want to get another model of the German Aircraft Carrier Graf Zeppelin and modify it into a Soviet VSTOL Carrier. Would that count for this build?

hey yall. does it have to be a WW2 era what-if? i ask because i had a pretty cool idea just a minute ago. scenario: "What if the American Civil War had taken taken place around WW1?" my build would be a Spad or the like painted gray with Confederate markings, or, if you favor the North, blue with Union markings. Rebelreenactor can probably appreciate the former. just wondering. later.

edzachary, you need to (if you haven't already) look for the book series by Harry Turtledove called The Great War. It has the South winning the Civil war and then in WWI it fights (with Britain and France) against the US and Gemany. He has another series with WWII following the same premise

Jon, sounds like a great idea but it's a bit far from the Pacific theatre of operations... Maybe we should just make this a much wider GB in terms of theme? What does everyone think?
