faded NATO paint scheme
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, September 16, 2004 5:35 PM
How would i add a faded look to the nato paint scheme of my LAV-25. it's the standerd green, black, and brown. I'm thinking of putting it in a dio in iraq. One other thing, how would i weather the bags, packs, and bedrolls that's going on the vehicle?

MIG Productions makes some great finely ground pigments that come with instructions on how to use them, but missing-lynx has some instructions too: http://www.missing-lynx.com/rareworld.htm
How to do rain marks, washing, filter (?), chipped paint and pigments. Downside (if you are dirt poor) the MIG bottles cost around 3-5 dollars a bottle.
They even make an Iraq sand pigment, perfect for your LAV-25

The missing Lynx pages are nice, but you will probably need to read them a couple times. I believe they were directly translated using Babelfish or something, because sometimes they don't make sense. You defenitely want to make sure the black is more of adark dark grey. If you look at the real vehicles, they seem to have a whitish haze over the black. It fades a lot

I have found that grinding white pastel chalk and realy scrubbing it into the painted model also gives a very realistic weather to the nato scheme. The finished result looks pretty close to what I have seen over here.

As for weathering duffels and packs, the sun here is VERY INTENSE. It fades canvas very effectively. As for the nylon (IE ruck sacks) I have not noticed it weather as much. I paint my stuff a base coat of MM field green, and then dry brush with MM pale green. This is a good match for ruck sacks and newer duffel bags. For extremely faded duffels and tarps, I use MM faded OD green, dry brushed with MM light gray. This gives some variety of color to all of your stowage items as well. I know that of the 4 duffels I deployed here with only the 2 that I got issued right before I mobed out are the same color. So you have some creative license on this issue.

did you try baby powder? mix it in the paint and it should dull and fade it.
