I just finished the Academy KIFV, and the only easy way I found to do the treads was to paint them while still on the sprue, and assemble starting with the drive sprocket. From there, I made small sections to fit the drive wheels, just enough to reach the next wheel. In all, except for the bottom treads, I never assembled more than 5 or 6 treads at a time. This also gives a little time in which the treads are still flexible for positioning. The final join point to complete the treads was at the rear lower curve, just under the return pulley.
