Really? I found the fit to be, not perfect, but workable. A little nib and tuck here and there but all in all the fit was pretty good. Remember MRC use to distribute Tamiya and maybe they brought a little something with them when they came over to Academy Evil [}:)]

Thank Ya'll for the info. I'm thinking Tamiya late for the kit, but I'm going to have to think about the zimmerit for a little while. Thanks for the invite to the group build, but I've tried uploading pics before. The pics never seem to work out. I think it's issues with my firewall which I don't understand.

I have built the Tamiya Mid and the Tamiya Late. I also have the Academy waiting for me in a box. I have already test fit the Academy interior into a Tamiya kit and the fit was not acceptable. IMHO, the Tamiya Late Tiger is the best on the market and it does come with indy tracks. The Tamiya Mid Tiger is just the late version with the earlier road wheels. If I remember correctly, this means there are a few things on the Mid Tiger that need to be corrected.

As far as zim, I would suggest staying away from PE zim and go with a resin manufacturer. IMHO resin just looks better. Don’t ask me what company is best though, because I usually make my zim from putty.

If you want to replace the tracks, there is no question about it, Friulmodel make the best replacement tracks. Yes, the Tamiya Mid and Late Tigers come with indy tracks, but they have two ejector pin marks per track that should be filled. That adds up to a lot of putty!! I have tried both the Friul and the MK tracks and the Friul are by far the best as far as ease of construction and how realistic they look when done.

If you are going to go the PE rout, I am currently using an Aber set, and I have used an Eduard set for one of my tigers. The Aber sets are the most detailed, but the Eduard sets are by far the easiest to construct and will do a lot to preserve your sanity. If you decide to use PE, and it is your first time, get the Eduard set.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

IF you decide on the 1/35 Tamiya Tiger I early (or mid or late for that matter), come join the gtoup build that starts 1-8-05. We'd love to have you.

If cost is a factor, take a look at the Academy Tigers. They have great interiors, and one of them (they do an early and mid, I think) offers two types of tracks. There was a thread about them a little while back, and most people seemed to be happy with it. Here's the link to the thread

IMOHO If you really want the best you should combine kits. Again IMOHO you'll need the Tamiya Kit (either Early, Mid or Late doen't matter) as the donor. Get the Academy Kit for the interior and Indy Tracks ( not the best Indy tracks but pretty good) and the eduard PE set. Lion Roar also makes a pretty good PE set and Verlinden makes a nice interior and engine bay set. Can't help you with the zimmerit but I've heard Cavalier makes a decent set as does Verlinden (not so sure on that one) also get yourself a good set of brass shells and a good set of figures to go along with it. Do some research and get the archer transfers they make a wide variety of markings for just about any Tiger unit. Again just my OHO I do not work for any of these companies YET! Big Smile [:D]

This is just a little gallope pole to get some opinions on a very popular armor subject.

Who Makes the best Tiger I? I'm thinking about making either a mid to late model tiger with zimmeritt. I don't want to fabricate zim out of putty or epoxy, so who makes the best aftermarket zimmeritt? What aftermarket PE sets should I consider? I'm more concerned with exterior than interior.

My collection seems incomplete without a Tiger I (Kingtiger is covered). It's about time that I corrected this situation. All opinions are welcome on this subject.
