chipped and beat up panzers
Posted by JWest21 on Monday, September 20, 2004 6:50 PM
Looking online, I sometimes come across Panzers that have a chipped look around the edges, around hatches and the like. I always used a lead pencil and run it along the places where I want chipping, followed by washes and a flat coat.. I see ones with what appears to be a reddish black (for example, Steven Heng's Panther on Missing-Lynx) and was wondering how you guys do it

There are a few ways that I simulate chipping JWest. To begin with I use a variety of colors. For a simple scratch on a Dunkelgelb, I use Vallejo Black Grey (which looks like a Panzer Grey). For newer scratches on Dunkelgelb, I will first make the scratch with a lightened version of the basecoat and Humbrol Matt Black 33 or Vallejo Black Grey in the middle of the scratch. For an older scratch that may be rusting, I use Vallejo Black Grey with Vallejo Calvary Brown. I think it looks convincing.

Thanks, Moses. One more question for you- do you thin the paint any or just right out of the bottle?

I always thin the paint. For the Vallejo Acrylics I thin about 50% with Distilled Water. As for the Humbrol, I will thin it with Humbrol thinner also about 50%.

For a dunkelgelb base, I use MM Rust enamel slightly thinned and applied with a toothpick to simulate scratches and get into crevices. I also will follow along behind that with artist pastel burnt umber to accentuate edges/panel lines, etc. and when dull coated, that pastel sinks right in just like a wash but more precise IMHO.

Lots of different ways to produce this depending on your paint of choice, your method of sealing (or lack thereof), and if you want to use wet or dry methods. Wink [;)]

Tamiya's Jagdpanther. It just looked too neat for me, so I toned down the paint and beat it up while I watch MNF
