T34 with the D-5T gun
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 26, 2004 10:48 PM
Does anyone have any information on the T-34 85's that the Russian Orthodox Church donated to the 38th Independant Tank Regiment that later joined the 53rd Combined Arms Army? I have converted a Lee kit to represent this variant of the T-35/85 but I am at a loss to find any information on the markings that these vehicles would have carried. Any help would be much appreciated so that I can hopefully, and finally!, put a finished kit on display soon.
Below is a pic that I have found to help anyone out who doesn't know what the heck I am talking about.

Thanks guys.

I have seen a few pictures of T-34's from this regiment and they are all in winter camouflage. The name could be either black or red, I have decals for both colors. The Kagero book, "Eastern Front, Pt. 1" shows a T-34/76 in winter whitewash and red letters. The decals could easily be used on a T-34/85. If you paint it green, make sure the letters are white. This regiment served near the Ukrainian-Romanian border. HTH.

cheers for that kaleu.
Do you know what the decals say/show? I assume they'd be in cyrillic though. Do you have any idea if i'd be able to find a pic of these on the net?

The name on the turret reads: "Dmitry Donskoy." He was a hero in the Imperial Russian Army at the battle of Kulikovo Field in 1380. I haven't found any online pictures of T-34's with this marking, however the Concord book "Soviet Tanks in Combat 1941-1945" and the Kagero Eastern Front book do have pictures of T-34's with this marking. The Kagero book also has the red decals. I might have some decals in white lettering (for green T-34's), I will look tomorrow and let you know to which kit they belong.

Thanks again for your help. I have T34 in Action and there are two pictures in there, both showing the Dimitri Donskoy name but i wonder though if there were any battalion identification marking or some such.
