USMC Armor in the Pacific
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, September 27, 2004 2:53 PM
Hello Gentlemen (and Ladies if there are any around),
I wanted to see if I could get any help from you all. You see I want to make a model from a picture I have on my desktop but I don't know what type of tank I am looking at. The picture is one of a battle in Bouganville that has infantry and what looks to be a M4A3 Sherman. The name of the tank is Lucky Legs II if that helps anyone out at all. It also has a Triangle with a 3 inside it on the left back quarterpanel which I am assuming means it belonged to 3rd Marine Division. I am not sure how to find the picture saved on my computer if I just have it set as my background. Otherwise I would try to upload it so everyone could see it.

If anyone can give me any insight on this I would greatly appreciate it. I know that from my description I am probably being somewhat vague but thats all I got to go off of. FYI I tried to google the tank name and the pacific theatre and others but all I am getting is porn ads. So if anyone knows of any other references I could use to look up a particular tank it would help me out a lot.

Thanks a million
Ben

Check out page 22 of Tank Battles of the Pacific War 1941-1945 by Steve Zaloga (Concord Pub., ISBN 962-361-607-4). If you look at the back deck you can tell it is an M4 versus M4A3. It also has the low bustle early turret with out a loader's hatch.

The raised "step" along the back deck is the armored lip that protects the engine access hatch on M4 and M4A1 tanks. An M4A3 would have a flat back deck with no step.

The caption identifies the tank as belonging to the 754th Tank Battalion supporting the 129th Infantry Regiment of the 37th Division on Bouganville. There are several photographs identifying tanks of the 754th using the geometric/numeric insignia.

These are US Army tanks and not USMC tanks.

The Tamiya M4 early tank, kit #35190, would be the appropriate kit to recreate the photograph as a diorama.

Rob,
Wow thanks a million man! I never dreamed that someone would reply so quickly and accurately to my post. I guess I should have known that it was an Army tank now that I look at it but I was in such a hurry to post that I overlooked it. If anyone found out that as a Marine I mis identified the markings on a tank as one of our own I would probably never live it down. I will definitely pick up the kit you referenced. Problem is that I have never built a piece of armor before. I have one Hasegawa 1/48th A6M2 Zero that is partially built but other than that all I have are failures. The Zero is throwing me through loops on how to paint the canopy.Taping off everything there is a bit intimidating.

But I will give this Sherman a try. I think I should be able to make it look fairly decent. My only problem lies in my own expectations of how the model should look. I keep comparing myself to some of these other guys that have had many years of experience. I should probably just concentrate on getting the thing together and move on to more advanced things from there.

Thanks Again
Ben
