Anyone built an Alan Pz IF??
Posted by wipw on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 4:33 PM
Hi, everyone. I picked up an Alan Pz IF at the regional last week. So far, it seems like a pretty easy build. Lots of seams to fill, though. But it looks massively out of scale to me. The track links are almost as wide as the ones on my Panther. Robert mentioned that he thinks they were a lot bigger on the J. Any opinions on that?

The track links don't have any ejector pin marks to clean up (are you listening DML???), but they don't fit well together. It will actually take a lot more time and effort to trim and shave them until they do, I'm afraid. But, I got the kit for $10, so figured it was worth the money. It will be interesting to see it sitting next to my DML B.

Catch you all later.

Sorry, do you mean the Pz II J or the Pz I F? Don't think Alan make a Pz I J. Either way, they're the only (cheap) option for these tanks and they're not that bad. They're a million miles from the quality of Tasca or Tamiya's newest stuff but they make a real nice project and with after market parts, they build into a good kit. Personally, I like the challenge of a kit that isn't perfect. As far as the dimentions go, I just measured my finished kit against the dimentions given in Panzer Tracts No. 1-2 and the length, width and height come out exactly correct. The kit is 125mm long which is a scale length of 4.375m as given in Panzer Tracts. I'd definitely replace the tracks with MK ones which are 15mm wide (52.5cm) which is correct for the Kgs 61 500/130 tracks used on the II J and the I F and they fit nicely. Hope this helps Smile [:)] Email me if you need pics or other details!

Scott,

Thanks a bunch. I appreciate it. You were abxolutely right, it is a Pz I F. I "discovered" that late Wed night, but haven't been back on to change it until now. I would love to see any pics you might have that you think would help me out. Some of the "big" problems I've seen so far are:

The dampers or shock absorbers or whatever they are on the front and rear of the hull do not fit properly into their locating holes and to the top of the suspension arms. I cut off the locating pins on the lower part of the shock absorbers and got them as close as possible.

The dampers that run from the hull to the back of the idler wheel mounts don't have the locating pins shown in the instructions and the end of the arm is too wide to fit behind the idler arms. I cut off the little pins on both sides of that end of the damper and slid it behind the idler wheel arms.

The tracks don't fit together too well. There are no ejector pin marks to clean up, but I've had to trim down each of the "male" parts of the links to fit into the "female" part of the link in front. It takes about the same amount of time as cleaning up the ejector pin marks on DML's tracks. Whoopie.

That's about as far as I've gotten so far. Not pressing hard on it as I've got other projects I'm doing for Christmas.

Thanks again, Scott, for the info on the sizes. That helps a lot to put my mind at ease on this project. Which MK tracks are the ones you're talking about for it?

Hope you're having a great day.

I just hope you received all your parts. The Alan ZIS-5 Russian truck I just got doesn't have any wheels. I am guessing that they don't have much in the way of customer service. I've got photos of your beast too if you need any.

Hi,
Here are a couple of links that might be useful. First a build log of the Alan kit which might help head off some problems.

The best kit of this tank. I noticed a lot of details on this that I hadn't seen before.

The Modelkasten tracks. Don't assemble any of the wheels or suspension if you're planning to buy this set cos they need to be modified.

This is the thread that I had going a while ago with some nice pics.

This is the Aber PE parts for the kit. Really good...except for the interior of the commander's hatch and the handle/locking mechanism of the side hatches - completely wrong.
