varnishing my models
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, October 11, 2004 5:31 AM
I want to put a coat of flat varnish on my latest model to help hide the decal edges and remove the glossy effect of the paint I used. How is flat varnish best applied to an armour model, and if you use an airbrush, will the varnish hurt the airbrush if its internal mix? Also, how do you thin the varnish for spraying? I've been told to use white spirit, but aren't too sure about it.

Hi..In my opinion the best matt varnish is Revell no.2...When sprayed,no white effect is produced..It can be used with an airbrush and can be thinned with normal thinner...Hope this is helpful.

I have used matt/flatt varnish with my Aztec airbrush I thin it down using acrylic thinners if its acrylic based or enamel thinners if enamel based (I think I have used both). There was no problems using the varnish. I sprayed it like I do an undercoat i.e. all over but avoided any "glass" parts (this was more through precaution than anything else). The air brush was given a good clean after using whichever thinners was required. Yes it does take a bit more cleaning but its a good excuse to give your brush a good clean at the end of building your model.

I use the ol testors spray bomb for gloss before decals but I finnish up with a semi gloss through the air brush. Sometimes I use testors MM Acrylic semi-gloss but most of the time I use a mixture of Testors Acrylic gloss and Gunze Flat...
