My humble Sturmtiger
Posted by tigerman on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 11:34 PM
I just completed my Italeri Sturmtiger for the Stug/Sturm group build. I thought I would share it here so more people could critique it. It has molded on zimmerit, Tamiya engine grilles, Tamiya indy tracks graciously donated by Moses (thank you Rob), and Archer transfers. I'm pretty pleased with it (for my skill level) LOL. I prefer a more subtle weathered finish rather than mud. Let the comments fly...Sorry my pics aren't as good as I'd like them to be.

I realize I could have done a few things better and may go back later and do them, but I'm not telling what it is. Evil [}:)] This turned out to be a maddening, but overall enjoyable build and at an affordable price. Onward to finishing my Marder. Tongue [:P]

That looks wonderful, Tigerman. Looks intimidating, too. Did it come with flexble tracks that you needed to replace them with Tamiya indies?

Now you something to keep your Panther company.

Great job!

She looks great tigerman, got that one on the shelf.

Hey Dwight the tracks are actually indies (kinda )however not up to par with the tamiyas, also I noticed a lack of detail on the road wheels as well.

Hmmm..are you saying that Tamiya has a better Sturmtiger? That's explain the price difference between the 2. I might get one of those someday.

For some reason the pics turned out darker than I thought and I lost detail in them. Sorry, I will try to get some new ones up, it's just late now.

Dwight, it is a pretty detailed kit, some interior and a poor engine, but I was impressed. Just a messy build at times, lots of putty involved. Rob told me the tracks stank and offered some Tamiya ones to me. To be honest, I never had any ambition to build a Sturmtiger, just my LHS had it for 50% off. Can't go wrong with that.

Well Tigerman, as the builder you of course know all the possible shortcomings of your build. On the other hand, I as a critic, without any particular expertise on Tigers in general and less so with the more esoteric Sturmtiger, cannot find said shortcomings in your photos. I like the metal on the tools, and in spite of the discussion about how they were often camouflaged along with the tank, I think they look a lot better individually painted. With such a nicely done camo scheme, I don't blame you for not wanting to hide it all under a heavy coat of weathering and mud. All in all, a fine build that you are more than justified in being pleased with.

Well actually I really thought the Italeri kit was the better of the two. I like the look of that molded zim, too.

Its hard to say which is thebetter kit, both have pros and cons, I only have fiddled around with the italeri kit and as tigerman mentioned putty is nessasary You get more for your dollar with the italeri kit.

Looks very nice. I'm not sure about the moulded in zimmerit. I have the Italeri Panther, and have stayed away from it until I feel comfortable enough to model my own. Somehow, the kit ones just don't look all that convincing. On that note, only suggestion I can make is maybe a more deep wash and a lighter drybrush to really bring out the zimm.
Otherwise, great job. A very intimidating vehicle.

Eric, Glad one of us has finnished a Sturmtiger... I very much like the look of yours. I built the Tamiya one and rest easy knowing it has its issues too. The Italeri one has the length and link tracks don't it? The molded on zim don't look too bad does it. You did a great job on the camo. The pics I have show the Sturms with LARGE patches of color just like you have done rather than a small squiggly type, Good job.

My only critique and its a small one (unless your the guy loading the shells) Are you gonna add the winch cable and sling? This was probably one of your todo things you mentioned but just incase it wasn't.

Overall terrific work Eric. Now you just need a 1.35 scale Warsaw Ghetto to go with it...

Dude! Awesome looking beast, I don't seem to see a problem with the tracks or road wheels as mentioned above. OUTSTANDING!

Thanks for the kind words.

Zokissima, I lost a bit of the wash with the overspray I used to fade the cammo. I did think it needed more drybrushing. Again, the poor pics loses a little of the drybrushing.

Kenneth, the winch and sling did cross my mind. Stupid me should have brought that up in the Group Build. Any suggestions?

Eric, Not to worry man.
For that small a winch cable I'd go with some sewing thread and a thick foil (lead foil would work) for the sling but poke around and see what you have. Try and find some pics of the sling itself cause it has some strange features, what looks like rivits or something all the way down both sides of the strap. (for that matter it may be a metal band rather than a loose strap.....HMM.. I'll get back to you...

Just now getting around to the old computer and forum been doing wife and daughter do's the last couple days. Anyway! What a nice surprise. That is one sweet looking Sturmtiger Eric. I'm not really qualified to critique such fine work, so if it's ok, I'll just tell you what I like about it? The tracks, the camo, the weathering, the quality of the build, the price, and your sharing it with us. Semper fi, mike

Thanks again for the comps. Italeri gets a little bit of an unfair rep, but I like many of their subjects and they are affordable. I really must get some new photos up, some of the weathering is just lost in the photos. If one or two things that I try out on another build works to my liking, I may do it to the Sturm as well.

That is a very nice job. The only thing humble about this Sturmtiger is the builders' modesty. You did an excellent job.

Beautiful.

It looks a lot better than my 1:144 Dragon version, probably because you spent more the 5 hours on it, and you have a talent with an airbrush. That will catch some attention at a show.

You know, I wish I'd kept track of the time spent. Though I'm sure it doesn't show it, I probably spent over 50 hours on it. Seriously, but then maybe I'm just slow. How do professionals finish so quick?

A very well done job. I especially like the camo finish applied . I have both the Tamiya and the Italeri kits and normally buy both offerings in thier armor lineup. Each manufacturer has a great product.

Welcome slyyfox to the forums. I think Italeri gets overlooked a bit, but they offer some nice eclectic builds at reasonable prices. Thanks for your comments.
