Model Problem
Posted by Jeff Gunn on Thursday, October 14, 2004 8:11 AM
Dear Forum

Recently I have been getting urges to build something other than Armour[:0] Is this normal, could it just be a phase Im going through?

It all started with me giving admiring glances at the odd signature picture you see croping up in here. You know the ones those with fine detail aircraft models, showing all there clean lines and high-lighted pannelingShy [8)] The more I looked at them the more I wanted to try it. I feel so ashamed and have started to even surf other forumsDisapprove [V]

Please Forum have you any advice for this confused armour basherDisapprove [V] I know my heart will always be with armour whatever the scaleSmile [:)]

A closet airplane builder, maybe? Actually, I have been through many phases. In my pile of unbuilts in the basement, I have tanks, a whole crop of Messerschmitts, some modern planes and even a 1/72 U-Boot! Do what ever you please. I don't think the Armor forum police will visit your house late at night (If you don't see any posts from me tomorrow, build tanks and nothing but!!)

Meh, I wouldn't worry about it. Who can sit there and build the same subject over and over and over again? Damn, I'm in the same boat. I just can't seem to start the commonwealth build. So tempted to build AC....
Either way, just go for it. If anything, it might reinvigorate you to come back to armor.

Jeff, it always works for me. I build Aircraft, Armor and even ships. I've even dabbled in a few Sci-Fi kits that captured my fancy. I love variety!

It's not what you build- it's how much fun you have while doing it

I wouldn't worry too much about a desire to try something different. Over the years the I've built a lot of different subjects: submarines, cars, ships, aircraft, and now lately armor. The cool thing about branching out is that all the different subject genres have slightly different skillsets. However there is still a lot of crossover between the different subject genres, so that new techniques learned building aircraft and ships can probably be applied in some fasion to improve your skill with armor.

It's an illness many of us are afflicted with Jeff. There is no cure and the best thing you can do is not feel guilt and accept the illness. I better go out into the garage and check on my 1/48 B-29 and 1/48 Lancaster. Oh I feel much better, they're safely tucked away with all the other wingie things. Semper fi, mike

Jeff,

You are not alone. This is one a few wingy thingies in my closet.

The way to appease the armor world is to incorporate your wingy thingy with some armor in a diorama and then no-one really notices that you are slipping towards the light... ha, ha, ha! Tongue [:P] I am thinking of doing the same thing! If it is any help watch fightnjoe, he is really into aircraft but has turned to the darkside to build a jeep and who knows what else! Big Smile [:D] "I am your Father Luke" The pull is strong to the darkside!Wink [;)]

If you made a JU 87 or an IL2 or another Tank buster you could build the plane and put it in a diorama with something like a T34 (for the JU 87) or a PZIVG(for the IL2). That way there is the best of both worlds.

-EDIT- DOH! I didn't read JCON's post before I made mine. That'll teach me to read all the replies before posting.

Oh, I get the bug too. I go out and buy a wingy and up on the shelf it goes, never to see the light of day. Sad [:(] Repeated this many times.

I guess there's more then a couple in the closet? I'm talking about wingie things. Maybe as many as 10 or 20. Sometimes I wake up and go to the closet and just stare at them. Then I go back to sleep and dream about armor. Semper fi, mike

hmmm my name was mentioned???? i heard it?????

actually variety is a good thing. i believe that those who build more than one subject really have an upperhand on techniques. take dan (boybuddho) for example. his work is outstanding in all subjects. lobbie is another who builds a variety and the talent is incredible. there are many many more but you get the meaning.

You're right Joe variety is good for the soul. I've even dabbled in figures just to keep the skill levels active. (note) I said active. That in no way means I can compare to some of the beautiful work our buddies in the figures forum produce. Semper fi, mike

Sometimes slopping mud on your fine airbrushing makes you crazy. If you look at the Strumtiger posting, imagine throwing mud all over that one. Imagine bending the fenders and mimicing wear. Us armor guys are a special form of silly.

I started building armor because you can flaw a paint scheme and call it battle wear. Now that I'm not so bad at using an airbrush, I have to creatively wreck the paint. Ugh.

Call aircraft what they are...a diversion. Build an F100, and then build yourself an Academy M3. You'll be motivated for sure.

You Know you guys are right, but I have been looking round the other forums....take the Helicopter forum, they only have one GB going...now correct me if I am wrong but as I see it, thats what these places are all about ...having fun with a group of like minded...so more of the GB's thats what I say...yeh those wingie things got it right I must admit they have loads of GB's....Now Dinosaurs!!!! thats just to wierd for me...or maybe way too hard, trying to get the life into something like that must take some painting skill.

That's right- this is fun! I plan on trying an Apache once Twobobs releases their OIF Apaches decals. Shark teeth and all- sounds cool. By the way, I did a dinosaur for my daughter and they aren't hard at all- no one knows what they really looked like, so you can't really have people correcting you!

While I am mainly an armor builder who builds sci-fi on the side, I have just finished an Airfix 1/32 scale VW Beetle. I am also working on a Tamiya 1/20 scale Ferrari formula one race car and am almost done with the 1/24 scale Tamiya new VW Beetle. This kit just fell together. I'm in the process of smoothing out the primer coat so I can paint the car body.

Cars, I think, are the most difficult because they usually are nice and shiny and you can't hide anything with mud!

Variety is the spice of our lives....I personally build aircraft, armor, cars, motorcycles and the occasional figure (in that order of preference). Keeps things interesting and alleviates boredom (for those of us with short attention-spans).

Its good to try something else every now and again. It sharpens up your skils, makes you try different things and gives you a different view than you are used to.

Dally around with other models, you know...., once you go track you'll never go back.

VW Beetle??? .... now theres a thought I remember seeing a picture taken during the fall of Berlin. I showed an early VW Beetle shot up outside a German Government Building. Throw in a couple of Russians and a T-34 and you could have a good dio there Wink [;)]

Well you know what? This is what is so great about our hobby. You can change strokes in mid stream. I am sitting here in my library and as I glance over at my model display case (which I am quickly outgrowing) I see tanks, planes, a helo, a German artilliery dio, a motorcycle, and a 54mm statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee! This is what it is about! Diversity! If you get tired of one genres, you can switch to something else while the old batteries recharge. BYW, over the fireplace is a model of the USS New Jersey and in the rec room are all of my 1/24 cars. So, get out of the closet and have some fun!
P.S. Gives one an excuse to go out and buy more plastic.

A few. I have to admit, I'm tempted to build a Phantom after that "Chico the Gunfighter" article in the latest FSM.

Being a wingy thingy builder who just built his first tracked vehicle I can honestly say "go to the light carolann" :) I enjoyed building my Bradley and theres still a few armour kits that need my attention but Aircraft will always be my favorite subject.
