The Patton Museum has some rather impressive pieces as well. I was at Knox this summer and got some great pics.... but alas, you couldn't climb on any of the vehicles there either. I did get some shots of their unrestored Panther A and Panzer III (Edog, I know, I owe you some photos!) Still dying to get to Aberdeen!

As a museum guy, I totally agree with seventrs. Contact them well ahead of time and you'd be surprised at the access you'll be granted. My last research trip to the Intrepid Museum in NY was rather productive when they allowed me to crawl in, on and around their AH-1J. But that's another story!

LOL boy I must have been out of it when I posted my last message. Looked like I was writing it half asleep. Heres another problem with goin inside the vehicles. The problem you ask would be the wild animal population inside most of the vehicles. It can be a bird community or groundhogs or even snakes. Now the snake problem should be no problem since it will still be cold when you come. Like mentioned above you best bet would be to get ahold of the curator of the museum. Now the question you had about other museums that you could visit. You could also go to the Patton Museum in Kentucky too. Just a suggestion. Bryan

As someone who works in the museum field, I can tell you that most curators are willing to assist visitors with legitimate and reasonable requests, especially when it comes to research. After all, that's part of their job, and military museum curators are aware that many scale modelers rely on them for information.

However, you'll have better luck if you follow certain protocols. First, contact the curator well ahead of when you plan visit. Most museum staff loath drop-ins, which always seem to come just when you're rushing to a meeting with the board of directors or frantically trying to complete your quarterly budget before day's end. Try sending an e-mail, or even better, send a letter by snail mail. Explain just exactly what is is you want to take a look at and why. Specify a time frame that leaves some flexibility for the staff. Ask about museum policies on photography, handling, or in this case, climbling on, exhibits.

Chances are if you use this approach, someone will be willing to accomodate your request. But don't take it too hard if you get a flat refusal. Most museums are operating with reduced staff these days and can't spare anyone for anything beyond the bare basics.

Good luck

Some years back I contacted the curator in person on a visit,&received
permission to climb on one of the tanks for some specific photos.
Perhaps the fact that I am a former USMC tanker may have helped,
but it never hurts to ask !!

Being that I am here everyday on good ole Aberdeen Proving Grounds I can tell you that you cannot climb on the vehicles at all. There is a big sign as soon as you pull in the parking ground that says just that. Now if you go to their website (forget the page) I think they do tours, but you would have to contact them and ask if you can. If you want a perspective on what you will see out here when you come here I have a pictures in the reference forum on the musuem pieces out here. Now since you will be coming here as a visitor you will have the dreaded visitors paper in your window and you will only be allowed to go where you stated to the MP that you are going. If you are caught anywhere else you will most likely be thrown off the Proving Grounds. Hope this helps. Any other questions just shoot me an email. Bryan

Most of the ones in the field adjacent to the museum are the unrestored ones (awaiting their turn). Climbing on any vehicle is strictly forbidden. If you're caught, you'll most likely be escorted off base. No one is standing behind you as you stroll among the displays, but Murphy's Law implies that when you do climb up, an MP will be within sight.

Most of the restored vehicles are now scattered throughout the post in front of buildings and on the parade field. I do not believe non-DoD ID card holders are allowed to wander the installation freely to look for these. Most military installations have more patrolling police cruisers than a civilian town of similar size so I would warn against attempting to wander the base.

I was there this past summer for a short visit. A lot of great stuff and a beautiful museum inside as well. Bring a lot of film and plan on spending some time.
I believe most of the hatches are welded shut but you're not allowed to climb on them anyway. Shermanfreak has some pics of him on the Leopold and mentioned having a discussion with some MPs afterward so I wouldn't suggest trying. You might want to try to contact them in advance and set up an appointment, maybe you could get inside something.
It is an active military installation, you have to go through check points and register your vehicle, so I'd be a little hesitant to push the limits too much about climbing on the exhibits.
As far as weather, April should be okay, rainy maybe, March is a crapshoot in the east, you could have temps in the 80s or still have a foot of snow on the ground.

Good luck and post the pics.
