Afrika Korp Yellow?
Posted by derekms on Thursday, October 21, 2004 7:21 PM
Which color more accurately reflects the color on German Afrika Korp vehicles Tamiya Dark Yellow or Tamiya Desert Yellow? This has confused me lately, I know dark yellow was the base color for almost every non-gray german vehicle in Europe, but I am not sure of the Afrika Corp Color. In case you are wondering, the vehicles I want to do are a Sdkf 223 Armored Car and Volkswagen Beetle. Both kits say paint Tamiya dark yellow but I don't think it would look right (too greenish).

Thanks,
Derek

Hmmm... I exclusively use Tamiya Dark yellow or Model Master Acrylic Dunkelgelb.

I would think Desert Yellow would be closer, at least to some drawings I've seen. Dark Yellow is basically their Dunkelgelb.

If you want to stick with Tamiya paints, I would say either is fine, even mix both together and try that. The "dark yellow" though was only introduced in February '43. The desert yellow I would say is more of a british colour, but the DAK did use captured stocks. If you can afford the spare change, do yourself a favour and try some of Testor's Afrika Khakibraun `41, Afrika Grünbraun `41, or Afrika Braun `42.

The DAK used different colors in '41 and '42 that do not correspond to Dunkelgelb or Tamiya Dark Yellow but are more of a desert sand color leaning to the tan side. The colors that jgeratic suggest are good to try out depending. I'd recommend pre-shading with panzer gray and painting the desert color over it as that would be more realistic. Some factory vehicles destined for the DAK were painted in factory colors but this mostly applies to Tigers not the vehicles you are wanting to represent.

I think that Dunkelgelb is a bit two light (and greenish) and that Sandgelb is a little closer to the color I want. I think it's really all personal preference since these colors were rapidly sun-faded and covered with the local mud to improve their match with the environment.

Enjoy your modeling...
