T-34/76 mod 1941 paint questions
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 24, 2004 5:44 PM
Hi there, just wondering a few things... first of all, is tamiya xf-64 red brown a good match for model master 1533 mahogany? it looks fairly close but Im not sure.
Also, should i be masking to do this or will it work freehand? its a pretty soft edged scheme and my airbrush has pretty good control but I'm just wondering what others do with this type thing.
Thanks all!

Can't comment on the paint resemblance question but on the area of soft-edge camo I usually go free-hand instead of masking as masking usually produces hard edges that have to be blended in to produce the desired result. If you are unsure about what you are wanting to reproduce, try sketching it out on paper first or use a pencil to lightly scribe in some guidelines as you AB and try that.

I went with Tamiya brown on my T-34/72 mod 1941 and had good results. The red brown seems to be more of a German color. I used silly putty to mask off the brown areas. The trick with silly putty is to not spray into the putty but away from it. Start in the middle of the masked off area and paint back to the putty.

well I sprayed the brown ( I had a bottle of that sitting around too) and it still looks a little too reddish. good thing I didnt use the red-brown! oh well thats ok cuz the green I used looks a little too light, so maybe it will all even out in the end!
Well, thats it for me, Im suffering from airbrush finger now, and my compressor is almost smokin, better call it a night.
All thats left is some dry brushing and weathering. if I want to sort of 'tone down' the whole thing, whats the best way to do that?
