Sherman progress
Posted by nsclcctl on Friday, October 29, 2004 7:33 AM
My first foray into armor. I have primed the Tamiya Sherman with silver which will look great on bare and worn spots of olive drab. I have the 3 sections in front of me. Tracks, body and turret.. When I put them together to paint, when do I put the rubber tracks on? Do I put them on the lower section before I paitn? I assume not since they will not be olive drab. How easy are they to apply when the tank is complete.

Also, how do you handle the cannon itself. Do you glue it in one place? I can't seem to get it right becasue the pieces are not staying together. I assume you use no glue on the mechanism. Can't figure it out. I am sure it is supposed to be put together so the cannon can be raised and lowered, I just don't know how.

I'm sure you'll gat many different opinions and suggestions on this, Nsclcctl..

Personnaly, I glue my tracks before painting, as I always end up painting the tracks in a dirty red-brownish black first, before doing any extra weathering... The reason I do this, is to avoid problems with glue showing up after the paint has been applied (as you know, glue will not do well on paint!), and avoid getting the paint flaking away as I twist and pull to get the tracks on (vinyl tracks of course, not the indi link ones!)

As to the gun, I like everything glued for good o my models, but I gather the majority here prefers to be able to modify the 'pose' at will.

I glue everything in place for keeps. As Shep Paine says, (and I paraphrase) we are making Scale Models, not toys to be played with. I paint my tracks off the model. But again, that's just me. I would say try it off the model to start and if that doesn't work, you can modify your game plan next time.My 2 cents [2c]

I always paint my tracks on the model, then mount to vehicle, and weather the whole thing as a unit to tie everything in together. As for the barell, I always glue mine into place. I know that some of them, if not all, are meant to be adjustable, but the parts usually don't fit well enough for this.

For tracks, I usually find it easier to paint them off the model prior to gluing the ends their ends together and mount them after I've painted the model. To make it easier to mount the tracks, I'll usually leave of the idler and drive sproket, until after I have gotten the tracks positioned around the road wheels. Once that is done, I'll put in the drive sprket, and then the idler wheel.

Well as for me, I paint and weather the tracks first before putting them on. This makes it easy to paint the whole tracks as it is rather difficult to reach all the tight spots once the tracks are on.

But as DJ stated, some glue may show after putting the tracks in place so some touch-up is necessary.

I am not sure about your problem with the turret and gun. I would assume that the instructions should be clear enough on the assembly of the said components. If you are missing some pages don't hesitate to inform us. We might have the pages you are looking for.

Good luck.
