That's a good idea. I will have to bring the wife with me or people may wonder.

Actually, chains are one of those things that I feel you really can't effectively "make" yourself and should use real scale chain. You can pick up chain in the model ship building section of most hobby stores.

Alternatives include craft chain, which you can get at most arts and crafts stores or even Walmart, or using old costume jewelry chain, which can also be picked up for very little expense. But, if your spouse/girlfriend has an old, cheap neaklace that they never wear...

Enjoy your modeling...

Thanks. I will have to check out the "other" sections of my LHS. Seldom do I venture beyond the plastic section, and then only to take something breakable out of the hands of my 3 year old

The model ship section of your LHS is also good for finding scale rope. I've been lucky enough to find different "weathered" shades of rope. It works well when you want to tie down stowage on the backs of vehicles. In the car section I have also been able find tow cable chain as well.

Go to a big hobby store, like Michaels or hobby lobby and look in the jewlrey section.

or

when the wife leaves the house, go to her jewlrey case and....nah, who would do that. (dont take gold because it doesn't do well with weathering, and she will know)

Good ideas from all I use both chains from the model ship section of my LHS or the costume jewelry chains from Michaels. I've also found materials for tow cables at Home Depot and Michaels. Small "mesh" wire, takes paint well and rust up good with chalk pastels.
