The wood shown on the side is the floor. When the M577 sets up in a static command post mode, the tent is erected over the lowered ramp and that wooden floor was dropped underneath. It is not a standard item. Some units use plywood as a floor, others just use a canvas tarp. Depends on what's available and weather/terrain. Sometimes nothing is used.

Yes, there are plenty of things I do not know. Yes, the trim vane is made of plywood. I broke one in my early years. I had lowered the trim vane to check inside the engine hatch and forgot to raise it back up before moving out. Cracked that thing like a twig.

Just a big piece of plywood stuffed with some styrofoam. You can see the yellow styrofoam peeking through the paint where the engine hatch handle rubs against it:

The trim vane is PLYWOOD?[:0] I didn't know that. Learn sumthin new every day!lol Is there anything you don't know Rob?lol
Now on my Tamiya M577 it comes with these optional "wood" panels to place on the sides. Was that a cheap form of feild appied applique armour or just used for hanging things like gear, or field briefing maps on the side of the vehicle?

The front plate over the trim vane is thin metal, not armor. It protects the styrofoam inside the front bulge. The styrofoam is added to give the front a little more buoyancy during amphibious operations. Underneath that bulge is the regular plywood trim vane.

The Add on Bulges are External Fuel Cells to keep the crew safer. Im not sure what the front plates real purpose is. Here is a pic of one I recently finished.

I just picked this kit up on sale today. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the optional add-on "bulges" are that can be added to the rear of the evehicle at either side of the rear door. Are they extended "fuel tanks"? And what is the additional rectangular angular "block" that can be added to the front over the trim vain? I know this is just a rerelease with some add-ons but I enjoyed putting my M577 Command Post Carrier [a high top m113] together so much I just had to add this "thin skin" to my collection. Any help or info on this build would be greatly appreciated.
