Panther Ausf. A & Zimmerit

I believe(I could be wrong here) that only approximately 12 of the very first panther A's were without Zimmerit.

I have a photo of an Ausf A, chassis number 151951, produced by Daimler-Benz on or about October 1st, which does not have Zimmerit. Even though factory applied Zimmerit started in September, it appears that factory application of Zimmerit did not start uniformly among all 4 firms involved with assembly. I can't seem to find a total number yet, but there were a few Ausf As that did not have Zimmerit.

From some photos I saw some Panthers A with a nice squared pattern zimmerit...
Is there any zimm manufacturer (Atak, Cavalier...) which reproduces that coating design?

Eduard makes PE zimmerit. I just purchased a Panzer IV Ausf.J, Sd,Kfz,161/2 from Tamiya and it came with a package of Eduard zimmerit. As a matter of fact I am in the process of applying right now. It sells seperately for about $20. Well, off to the workbench!

I went all out on this one as far as aftermarket-Hope this helps you in your decisions!

Thanks a lot to all, and thank you Steve for sharing these very intersting pixes... it looks like a great work indeed; I tried only resin zimmerit (from Cavalier) for a Tiger I late pro. I never manned the PE one... it seems a bit more difficoult to apply...?

I had a few problems with my PE zim for a Panther, but part of that was my fault. I personally don't like the detail as much as resin. It seems to lack some depth. PE zimmerit is however, more cost friendly than resin.

I like scratch Zimm its fun applying and you can get what ever pattern you want...and you can have damage and wear where ever. Best of all its cheap!!!!! and improves your modeling skills.

Jeff and Eric both make some good points here. After my experience on this Panther, I agree with the "lack of depth" observation. The PE zim is exactly to scale, which, for 1/35 armor, doesn't give the observer the visual impact that you need in 1/35th. I am currently building a 1/25th tiger, and a 1/35th Panther G- I'll be trying the hand applied methods which I have learned about on the forum. I've got my Milliput and my zim tools and I'm ready to roll!

I think Dragon's Panther A Early Type is the best 1:35 Panther model ever released. It looks good without zimmerit and can be built nice right OOB.
