DAK's Russian Cousin
Posted by wbill76 on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 3:51 PM
The cousin to the DAK 223 scout car got his finishing touches yesterday with a nice mudbath and some tools added. I deliberately built it "plainer" as the role of the 223 on the Russian front was very different from that of the 223 in N. Africa. Here are the finished pics (some of the bare bits that the camera reveals have already gotten the necessary attention required Big Smile [:D] ). As always, comments are welcome.

It looks like a bird did his business on it! Big Smile [:D] Just kidding, I just couldn't resist. I really like the worn look. Another fine build.

Rebel,

Yep, this is the Tamiya offering with the PE grills for the turret top. The grills come with their own PE support frames and are much better than the old kit molded ones for sure. Big Smile [:D]

Eric,

It's funny, but my wife had nearly the same reaction when she saw it finished. Tongue [:P]

Dwight,

Who knows, this one may even end up on a base...was eyeing the Woodland Scenics Sculpting Plaster in Hobby Lobby today and ideas began to swirl...

Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]

that's the first thing that came in to my mind as well!!

it actually looks quite cool tho Cool [8D] - i'm going to do a Tiger in the group build and hope to get a similar effect...

...do i have to get a bigger bird?Laugh [(-D]

joking aside, i think it looks very convincing: i like the way the whitwash is only on the upper half, with the wheels and lower hull being muddy; i have forgot to do that in the past.

how do you get both effects?

thanks for sharing, and i hope you don't mind the humour.Wink [;)]

kind regards,

nicholas

Nicholas,

Humor is always appreciated so no worries there! Wink [;)] If you can't laugh at yourself, well then you are just letting everyone else have all the fun!

To answer your question on the effects, it's a two stage process:

Whitewash: Basecoat of MM enamel Schwarzgrau sprayed on by AB and glosscoated, decals applied. With that base glosscoat, I applied about a 30-70 mixture of MMP White and ordinary water. This mixes up as a thin milky liquid that is brush applied all over the model. When it dries, it leaves behind varying thicknesses of the whitewash look. Once dried, I followed along with a sable brush and carefully removed the whitewash from the edges and surfaces where I wanted the streaked effect to be. Once satisfied, this was sealed with Testors Dullcoat in the rattlecan as the MMP powder is very easily rubbed off if not sealed.

Mud Effect: I took MM enamel Dark Earth and thinned it down in a little mixing tray to about 80% thinner and used a sable brush to apply it over the dullcoat lacquer in varying degrees where I wanted the mud effect to show. For the upper hull streaks this was done as a drybrush technique just enough to discolor the white and provide streaking. Since the MMP was sealed in previously, it did not wash off with the mud being applied and allowed both to be tied together in the finished appearance.

HTH.
