T-44 The daddy of the modern MTB
Posted by Ali1kj on Saturday, November 6, 2004 4:55 AM
Hi guys....thought you might like to see my recent project...
Its a T-44 (1969) rebuild stationed on the Mogolian/China border...

The Base for the kit is the AA hull and turret...

I rebuilt the hull with new engine deck and changed the angles of the rear plate...installad the engine bay and all the ducts (lots of resin to remove !!) and added many other details such as replacment fenders and stowage...lights etc...
The turret was corrected and the Cast-aCoat - 'ed to give the texture (not to rought in this case) and the roof details were changed...new sights and lights etc....

Changed the wheels and tracks (well that sounds to easy !) for the Tamiya T-55 ones) changed the wheel spacings and replaced the sprockets and idler mounts and added the Tamiya T-55 drive sprocket as well

Mounted onto Scotch pad base (just stuck it on with dabs of CA) and inserted baint bursh hairs (some were dipped overnight in food dye) into this with PVA glue...left to dry....

then wetted it with a 50/50 mix from the edges...inverted it for a bit to get the pad wet but not the grass....then returned it to the correct way up and dusted on MMP Weathering powders to form the groung between the grass (as it was dry the powders just settled thru)

That looks amazing! I especially like the open engine compartment with all the tools laying around. Good job.

That is beautiful work. I too like the engine deck detail you did. Very nice weathering too. I hope you have more to share sometime.

That is an outstanding build. How is the Accurate Armour kit?

A really impressive model, and a great setting too with the diorama base, figure and tools.
The detail on the engine and toolbox shown in the third picture is simply incredible !

Apologies for my ignorance, but what are the main differences between the T-44 and the standard T-34/85?
The hull seems to have a layer of applique armour, but is that an original feature or part of the 1969 rebuild?

Beautifully ugly! And I sincerely mean that in a good way. Fantastic job.

Cheers guys.....some answers

The Hull of the T-44 was all new....it was wedged shaped with torson bars,,infact the T-54 hull is (almost) identical in shape...some size differances but not much,,,,

the production T-44 engine decks were differant but in this uprade type, it is very similar to the T-54A

The production type had T-34 type wheels but with differing spacings to the T54A...in the first upgrade these were replaced with the later style starfish wheels (some photos seem to show a diffiering wheel spacing lay-out....but not sure yet if only test vechs)...in this second factory uprade to the T-44, the wheels were changed due to the later engine and gearbox pack being designed for the t-54 type drive package, tracks and wheels...it is then the (due to the 'track' being wider) they had to change all the fenders and stowage,,,as seen on the model...

The turret was a little lower than the T-34/85 as well as longer, there is also a bulge on the left side to get more space in the loaders area...all 85mm types used the d-10 cannon....this second upgrade type recived early IR signts as per the T-54A

I did one of the 122mm test T-44s a while back...these were based on production tanks, so all the early features are on this one below...freaky big gun !!!!

(In my web page gallery you can see the production style engine deck and compaire)

The AA kit is great...but maype the wheels could be replaced with a set of dragon ones ...wheels are hell in resin that size and concdering the shape and thin central section...I cannot blame AA for that....nice kit...if need be you can use a metal barrel...one for a SU85 is the correct type...I used the kit one with a new end cover rolled from brass/....I used as said a resin T-54 engine and 'educated guessed' the rest...it was however wired up right and that is all you can really see anyway :)

So...again thanks foor the comments guys...glad you like the T-44...I do...funky looking thing :)
