Does anybody have any input about this kit?

Well, it's good for target practice with a BB gun or for blowing up with firecrackers. Other than that, I can't recall why I built it several years ago. Either go with DML T-72's (which do need a little help with detail) or the Tamiya T-72.

Well, I built this on 1990. The molding, fitting and details were not as good as DML and certainly far inferior to Tamiya. Yet I managed to complete it. On the other hand after I bought this model in the spring of 1990:

1) I had two car accidents. My car total lost.

2) I broke up with my girlfriend.

3) I had big fights with my roommate.

4) I screwed up my school grades.

You see, cferrero, this AMT T-72 is not only bad to build, but it also has a curse on it. After I threw it away, I got a new car and new girlfriend; improved my grades and made peace with my roomate. So IMHO, if you really want it, I suggest you not only get some BB guns and firecrakers, as suggested by kaleu, but also a voodoo master to product you.

go with tamiya and a pe detail set.

The amt kit is good for beginers to the armor field.Its cheap,easy to build, and you will get the basics of armor building before you spend the big cash on tamiya and other prducts.
Later it will come in handy as pellet gun fodder or as a chew toy for a pit bull (or) as in my case, your son will get a hold of it and it will vanish in to the labrinth of his room.
If you havn't built any armor before then I say go ahead and build it.
If you have then give it to a kid and let him build it - then you both can blow it up together.

Anthony, if wasn't for the info about the kit then I'd say you've got a smash-hit country song just for that year alone! LOL! (glad to hear things are much better now!)
Anyway, I am just a beginner in the armor field(just completed Dragon's MLRS--LOTSA FUN!) and found the AMT T-72 on e-bay for like $10, so I figured what the heck.
But now that I see all this negative info on this kit alone, I think I'm gonna leave it!

$10? That's over-paying for the kit. Back in the mid-90s they were being clearanced at the Big Lots/Odd Lots closeout stores for $4.99. I bought several of their various kits.

In all sincerity, Esci (the manufacturer of the kits) produced these kits prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall when Soviet equipment was super secret and many models of their stuff was either ancient or based off of distant, fuzzy photos. Much like the Lindberg T-80, they gave us modern armor builders something Soviet to build besides the Tamiya T-62. Then DML came onto the scene and flooded the market with decent T-72/80, BMP-1/2, BRDM-2/3, BTR-70/80.

No, not all. AMT re-boxed Esci armor kits in both 1/72 and 1/35 scale here in the US. The Esci M60 Blazer, M60A1 and M60A3 are the finest 1/35 scale M60 series tanks made by anyone. All thre kits have been reissued recently, the M60 Blazer and M60A1 by Italeri and the M60A3 by Revell of Germany. Esci also had the best T-55 series (T-55, T-55M, Ti-67) made until the new Tamiya kit. Avoid AMT/Esci's M1, M1A1, T-72, T-74, Leopard 2, their BMP1/2 series is not bad.

Esci 1/72 scale armor kits are still highly prized, especially the WW2 armor. AMT boxed a bunch of 1/72 Esci kits, mainly their modern armor kits like the M1, M60 series, M113 series, all of which were very decent kits and the M60 and M113 series were the only ones available in this scale.

AMT's original kits were mainly sci-fi and cars. They made the original Star Trek kits almost 40 years ago and some of their last Star Trek kits were very nice.

Well, if one wanted to do burned-out Iraqi armor, use the AMT, otherwise...steer way clear.

I agree with the Major, the M60 and T55 are very good, the T72 is not. $10 is too much for it, you can find them in garage sales for a lot less.

I build this kit about 8 years ago. It was my first tank model and I bought it at Big Lots very cheap. I also bought a T-55 and a Leopard 1 at the same time (it was a great buy) I still have the T-55 but traded the Leopard away a long time ago. I was kind of pleased with how the thing turned out. Gave me a chance to try drybrushing.....worked out really well. If you need a kit to practice on and you can get it cheap, this is the one.

Is it good? Sure, If your kids want to play army with it. As far as I'm concered It's a big box of junk plastic. Fletcher

i built the m60 and it was a very nice model when it first came out, but the other guys are right the t-72 you are talking about is good for only doing a burned out Iraqi tank or bb target pratice.
