white metal
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 8, 2004 4:10 PM
I purchased a Maquette model T-122mm SP Howitzer.
It comes with a white metal barrell that is WARPED.
I've never worked with white metal. Any hints on un-warping it? Gently bend it, gently warm it, pound on it, whatever. It also needs to be drilled. I am guessing that is a routine process.
The kit came with a resin turrent (I didn't read the box carefully) I read somewhere that resin needs to be carefully cleaned in order to hold paint - draino, softscrub ???
Thanks for whatever help.

Most 'White Metal' is relatively soft and careful bending should do the trick. Drilling into metal is obviously a touch harder than in plastic but no big problem there either. Resin bits are coated with a releasing agent and a soak in soapy warm water will do the trick. While cleaning resin, beware that fine resin dust can do some nasty things to your lungs.. Wear a mask, and sand with sandpaper and water to keep the dust from flying all over. By the way, white metal bits would benefit from the above soak too, but so would ant plastic parts too! Mixed media kits like the one you are talking about will GREATLY benefit from a primer coat to 'even out' the surfaces to be painted.

Forgot to mention that 'White Metal' contains lead... Wash your hands thoroughly after you work with those metal bits! Also, while drilling into metal, beware of those shavings. You only have two eyes!

Wasn't white metal containing lead made illegal some years ago.
I remember when the metal I used to cast wargaming figures changed.

I think all the Citadel figures are also made from the new lead-free white metal since 1997.

Thanks for the help. The primer mention was great - the kit had resin, white metal and three colors of plastic!
It will be an interesting project.

I don't know where you are, Model Museum, but the "white metal" some of my customers (SHQ, for instance) use still come with a warning about the model containing lead... SHQ models are distributed in the US and all over Europe.
