Dwight- nice pics. I bet Dragon modelled theirs based on this one, thus the lack of the gun cover.

I don't know how far you are,but try to put the tool stowage and the tow hooks on AFTER you apply the fang decal.I had to remove the hooks and snapped off the bow MG in the process.Boy did I blow a gasket! After all this I couldn't get the damn decal to fit right.I'm stuck free-handing it.This will be a first.

Looks like the top is green, in fact it looks like the stripes are just in a band around the upper-middle part of the chassis and the sides of the turret. Pretty cool...

In reply to JWEST21 All photos I have seen show the full gunmantel cover that extends down the gun tube. Trakz does make a nice resin gun mantel cover for m26/46 for about $11. it comes with two types. A full cover version that extends partly down the gun tube and one that leaves the guntube uncovered. There is also a canvas muzzle cover for an M26. Eduard also makes a PE set for the M46 and you can get an aluminum guntube. I also was thinking about getting a Tamiya M26 and choosing the best parts between the two kits.

The Squadron Pershing book also has some very good b&w pictures and color plates. The Pershings had the cover over the gun mantlet. The pattern doesn't go to the back hull and appears to stop about halfway. Some of the tool boxes on the hull sponsons do have paint on them. The paint doesn't extend much past the top lip of the turret. I would think orange would be the main color (like a Tiger), but I haven't seen any color photos. Concord publishes a very good book on the war in Korea titled "Tank Warfare in Korea, 1950-1953"

Question for you gjek- your reference photos- do they show the tanks with or without the canvas cover over the gun mantlet? The one I have seen has it, but naturally Dragon doesn't provide it. Apparently Tanx workshop or someone makes one for a couple bucks, but I wanted to make sure before I try to order one. (Because to justify shipping, I will have to think of some other things I need from wherever I find it)

I decided to brush on Tamiya XF-62 olive drab for the stripes. It's starting to really come alive with those stripes!I'll keep you posted on my progress since we're doing the exact same tank.I definately want to hear about yours.

I forgot to mention, normally I brush armor.I went with spray for this one because past experience has shown that working with yellow can be a real bitch. It wont cover anything but white and that poorly. Can you say visible brush-stroke?Definately go with airbrush or spray paint for the yellow.

I'm working on the same kit right now.I'm primarily following the pics on the box.For color I used Tamiya spray TS-34 Camel Yellow and TS-5 Olive Drab.I especially like the Camel Yellow. It's a darker yellow but is glossy.I plan to hit it with a little dull-coat.I'm not sure about the stripes yet.The photos of the model show Olive stripes. The box art depicts black and a little white.
BTW,the Tamiya sprays are the best I've ever used.Good luck.

I need help with M46 tiger paint pattern
Posted by gjek on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 9:12 PM
I have set my sights on the 6th batallions tiger striped paint scheme in Korea. My problem is it really bugs me when I build or paint something inaccurately. OK I know I should get over it but I haven't yet. I have several reference photos of the sides and front views. What did the top view look like? Did the pattern stop at the top edge of the turret? The cupula is not painted in my pictures. Did the pattern extend to the rear deck? Was the tops of the sponson boxes painted? What were the real colors? The text says yellow but all of the artists renditions show more of a school bus color or orange.

Happy Birthday Marines! Uh Rah!
