DML Pak 35/36 Kit, Not happy!!
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, November 11, 2004 8:35 AM
Has anyone built Dragon's Pak 35/36 kit? I started it for a break away form my Jeep and before I start my Tiger. It looks like an old Italeri kit. Flasch, huge sprue to part mounts, massive parting lines, warped parts, and severly blurred details. Then there is the typically butter soft grey plastic in a dragon kit. I will get it built, but for what you pay, it would be much better to work on the Tamiya version and fix the inaccuracies in it and at least have a good place to start and a better finished product. And the Tamiya kit is still $7 online. You do get a nice color instruction booklet, big whoop imho. Give me a photo copy of the Directions and a good set of parts and I would be much happier.

I just bought the Dragon Elefant, I hope it's not as crappy as this one.

I haven't seen anything of this kit, but I guess it's not in line with their recent release of the Pak 40. That one is supposed to be a great kit.
As for your problems, I say just go for it anyways, and build it up. For the most part, Dragon have very decent kits, with a few notable exceptions. I've built their MAZ TEL SCUD launcher, and that was almost as crappy a kit as they get. Pretty much every problem you describe was evident.

I am working on the Alan Bison 1 Kit. Same problems. The drive Sprokets on the kit are only detailed on one side. sigh..... Alot of plaster work, sigh again, A few parts even split as I cut them from the spurs. But look at the bright side I like this hobby for the challenges. It sure beats watching the junk they put on TV these days.Smile [:)]

Dragon has some skeletons lurking in the closet and this sounds like one of them. It's often hard to tell, especially online, whether a kit is an old or a new one. Sorry to hear you ended up with a tough nut. I'm sure you'll crack it though and make it shine. Smile [:)]

Thanks for the heads up Tediam. I would not have expected this kind of problem from Dragon. Evil [}:)]

Sorry to hear you got a lemon Ted. It happens to us all sooner or later. I just ordered the Elephant today for Tigermans group build. It's suppose to be a pretty decent kit from the reviews on it. Semper Fi, mike

The new tooling DML Elefant, Ferdinand, Nashorn and Hornisse are all good kits. The old versions of these kits are real beasts. They aren't in production but can still be found on Ebay and at model shows.

That is a bummer, but the Elefant is not. Lots of pieces to play with. Good molding.

Ted. I have built the DML Pak 35/36 and had no flash or warpage. The detail is better than Tamiya's old offereing of the 3.7mm, but not up to current standards of course. Sounds like you got the lemon out of the batch. I'm sure you can rise to this challenge.

PetBat, I think you are correct. The sprues are slimy almost even after washing, like it was a bad cast that sombody said, hell with it, and put it in the box. Perhaps the black cat has crossed my path. But I will put it together. Luckily I have an Aber barrel and eduard PE. That will even the playing field, I hope!!!!

Thanks for all your input,

Ted

Perhaps you need to sacrifice a goat to exorcise the bad modelling spirits
