The Tiger I ausf. E debuted (to Allied horror) in Africa I think (Kasserine?)?, around late 42 early 43...but it might be close, I know they were used in Russia around the same time. Compiling as much information (from books, articles, etc) before modeling is key. Reference material really helps nail down the accuracy of your models. Hitler basically thought Africa was a side-show, but the entire spectrum of German vehicles was most likely used in the DAK (Afrika Korp). Rommel used lots of captured equipment also. Read as much as possible. Good luck!

This is an incomplete list but you could start with Tigers, Pz IV F2, Panzer III's (not sure of variant), Marder III, Pz II and the "88" anti tank/aircraft gun. I'm sure other members can come up with more vehicles. HTH

Well, what do you mean by early?

The initial campaigns were fought between the Italians and the British. Before the Germans, the Vichy French were there. Then, the latecomers were the Yanks.

Italy:
All sorts -- don't have a good listing.
M13/41, etc.

British:
Matilda I
Matilda II
Crusader I-III
NO CROMWELLS
Churchills (don't know which marks, but early)
Light Tank Mk IIAs and Mk IIBs
Light Tanks Mk VIs (various marks)
Stuart Honey
Grant
Sherman M4A1, M4A2
Covananter (Cruiser Mk V)
Valentines
Cruiser Mk I, Mk III, Mk IV

Germany:
Pz I ausf A, B
Pz II ausf C, F, G (probably more)
Pz III (various marks)
Pz IV (various marks)
Tiger I
Stug III ausf D
Various SPGs (Marder III 76.2mm, sFH 13/1 auf Lorraine, etc.)

France:
Renault R 35

USA:
Sherman M4, M4A1 (75mm gun tanks)
M3 Lee
M10 Tank Destroyer
M3 Stuart variants
M7 Priest

And of course, I'm sure I'm missing stuff.

Oct '42 was the first usage of the Sherman in N Africa by British units at Alamein.

Hope this helps,
RC

I'm tyring to put together a group of models representing the vehicles that fought in northern Africa early in the war. I know pretty well what tanks, etc., the Allies used,i.e. Grants, Stuarts, Valentines, Churchills, & Cromwells. Were Shermans used in any numbers early on?
Also, I'm kinda hazy about what armor the Afrika Corps used.I figure Panzer I-IVs, but were their any others I need to find?
Much thanks for all of your responses.
