A good morning's shopping
Posted by buff on Sunday, November 14, 2004 5:06 PM
My wife went off to New York city for the weekend last Friday morning, so my son and I went off to troll the local hobby shops looking for stuff to buy. He picked himself out a die-cast 1/87 excavator, while I took home the Academy Tiger 1 Early with interior (at an outrageously low price!), the AFV Club Pak 40, and the Dragon Sd.kfz 251 D 3-in-1. The 251 and the Pak will someday end up in a diorama together. I'll wait on the Tiger until I can afford some extra goodies. It seems such a good kit that it would be a waste not to put in a little extra effort to really make it a winner.

Nice haul Bill. What are your thoughts on the 251 and Pak 40?

So far I've only had a quick look inside the boxes. Tomorrow night I'll open both up and take a good look at the sprues for flash etc and at the instructions. Certainly the reviews are good. I had a hard look at the AFV Club 251D, but it was $10 more. Maybe I'll get it down the road so I can compare...

The AFV kit doesn't come with indies either. Dragon would be a nobrainer if you ask me.

Nice haul. I got the same Tiger kit myself a little while ago for a pretty good price. Let me know if you find any worthwile AM parts for it.

If any of you are interested, here's a comparison between the Dragon and AFV kits:

QUOTE: Nice haul Bill. What are your thoughts on the 251 and Pak 40?

Sorry about taking so long to get back, but I'm sat in front of my computer with the boxes beside me, so let's have a look! Btw, pmms does great reviews of these kits. First, the Pak. The instructions look ok. All line drawings but pretty clear, and not at all crowded. One thing is that the paint scheme on the box is not shown in the instructions. I haven't seen any flash, nor any obvious ejector pin marks, although there are some parting lines.
Now the 251 D. There are lots of parts! With three options, that's a given. I think the instructions are cramped. Again, with three options, there is a need for a lot, and they tried to cram them into a few pages as possible. There are a ton of painting options, 11 for the 1/D. One really neat bit is that there is the choice of using pre-cut indies(late pattern), or the early patterns on the sprues. They are small, but look clean. The instructions aren't really clear about how they go together. Both look ok. I hope I don't have the same fit problems I had with the Dragon Firefly!
