T-72 in calgary?

It could also be a captured vehicle.I was at Aberdeen recently and they have a restored Iraqi T-72M on display.

It says on the page, "Ex East German" so yeah, the Germans sent it over. This is great! Now I have some reference pics for when I get another T-72 tank to build into a German one. Thanks for posting this!

no problem Mark, its quite an impressive vehicle up close... as I walked towards it, I was looking at that turret and going 'that looks like a t-72, but what the heck is it doing here?'
they also have a churchill, 2 shermans ( one is inside in a 1:1 scale dio) and a centurion i think... also a lynx, lots of howitzers too. really a great museum.

they have a universal carrier too!

i remember the first time i saw the t-72, it was one of my first times driving, i looked breifly over at the museum and there it was! it was hard to not look at it and watch the road.

i posted a topic similar to this when i first came to these forums, shermanfreak i think said it was from yugaslavia (i cant spell), i think it was a captured one or somthing.

Matt, I live in Winnipeg and for years up until recently the Germans have been leasing the Shilo base here in Manitoba for Desert Tank Training. Manitoba has some weird Geological formations and we have this large sand Dune area left over from when Lake Winnipeg was ten times the size it is now. Just an educated guess but that is probably the source of that tank.

A few years ago they stopped leasing the base and packed up all their armor and shipped it home. I was working in Downtown Winnipeg and my office overlooked the rail line when the train went through loaded up with all the armor. Were is your camera when you want it!!!!!!

I recall the first time I saw a T-72. It had two columns of flame shooting out of the turret hatches about 50 foot tall. Reminded me of two rocket motors. This one looks in better shape.

Gjek, that must have been an awe inspiring sight! Especially if you were responsible for those fountains!

Speaking of "where's your camera when you need it", I was heading through my local shopping mall's parking lot, when i saw a military truck sitting there with what looked like a tall radio antenna sticking straight up. As I got closer and passed by it I realized that it's no antenna! They had an M198 Howitzer hooked up to their truck, and had a sign on the thing: "Marine Corps, Toys for Tots." Wow! that was pretty awesome looking. By the time I left the mall, they had left, so I couldn't get a closer look.

They have a T-72 at CFB Borden just 10 minutes down the road from me here in Barrie. I believe its EX East German too. I think there is a T-55 also.

Its actually a pretty good collection of Centurions, a Panther, Wirbilwind, some Stuarts, T-34/85, Valentine and some Ram series Shermans and a whole bunch of other stuff.

If anyone needs soome pics I have no problem taking some. I need to go back and see what exactly is there.

A bit of history on this T-72 . I first seen it in Calgary , at Sarcee Barracks in the mid "90's. It is former East German , and was operational. It was still driveable.When the Brigade moved to Edmonton , it came along too , ending up at Steele Barracks , in the unit lines , of the Strathcona's , where it lay outside of the compound neglected, and it has been since moved to the Museum of the Regiments , in Calgary.

The Strathcona " Historical Troop" , at Steele Barracks , in Edmonton , have a operational Centurion , 2 Shermans ( Catherine , and Beowulf ) , a M5 Stuart , and several Ferret scout cars . Plus from what I understand are refurbishing several other vehicles . The people in this troop dedicate alot of time , in preserving Corp History. As a matter of fact the Regiment , sends a Sherman to take part in the Remembrance Day Activities in Fort Saskatchewan , as well as a " quarter guard ", and the Regiment's Guidon.

Sorry Matt; That's what happens when you hit the wrong key.Anyway, since a Strathcona was nice enough to help out, how can a Dragoon do less. We received I believe 5 T-72 's from the former East Germany in 1992-3 for display/ testing purposes. I know 1 of these is on display at the CFB Gagetown museum, and at least 2 were used testing tank ammunition.Most Canadian Bases have museums that have vehicles and weapons from the last century.Here in Petawawa we have an 88, I believe both a Pak 38 and 40, several Shermans,Centurions etc. SGT JJ.
