Airfix Armor question?
Posted by wooverstone8 on Monday, November 15, 2004 9:52 PM
Hi all

I'm thinking about building some Airfix armor kits. Probably German armor. Are any of them any good overall or are they complete junk?

What scale are you talking about?I've only built the 1/72 scale kits and only a few at that.If you want a more detailed kit go with Hasegawa,Revell,Italeri Dragon Models or PST.I would recommend the following Airfix kits. The British Cheiftain,Japanese Type 97 Chi-Ha,British Matilda II,or the White M3 Halftrack.

...and the WWI Mark I 'Male' too. Their best AFV kit, I think.

Hello!
Airfix had produced several 1/32 scale armor kits , among them " Monty' s"staff car", M3 Lee/ Grant , Crusader 3 , and a 17 pdr AT gun with crew. Plus several soft skin vehicles, and some figure sets , IE Afrika Korps Infantry. They build into nice models . You may find them on E-Bay , but beware the seller at a hobby show , I seen an Airfix 1/32 17 pdr , AT Gun and for the price he asked , I could have bought a Tamiya 1/25 scale Centurion, and then some. So watch out for " Rare kits" , or the so called " Limited Issue " ones.Because sooner or later , it may be re issued , or someone put's out a better model. I have the complete collection , of the old 1/48 scale Aurora Armor, unbuilt at home , I am not selling because I am building them as we speak. As for the the Airfix , 17 pdr , I just received 5 from a friend in the UK . Not for sale .

the airfix sheridan isn't a bad kit,
& if u want 2 try a german piece, their panther builds up nicely.
these r nominally 1/72 kits, but probably closer 2 1/74...
(they were originally marketed as 1/76, apparently)
if u r looking 2 do 1/72 german armor, the hasegawa panther G
& panzer iv r fun 2 build & look good when done,
airfix & hasegawa kits have 'rubber band' trax w/ detail ranging from
poor to fair...
revell germany kits r excellent, especially their newer ones,
they have plastic link & length trax w/ better detail.
their panther a/d & tiger r great kits !

How do Monogram's old 1/32 Grant and Lee compare to Airfix's Grant/Lee?
I built the Monogram kits when I first got into armor in the '70s, and remember them fondly.

Hello!
I have built both kits , and I liked the Airfix Grant better . I found the molding better. But remember this was years ago. How ever with some patience , the Monogram kit builds into a decent model .I too have fond memories of the old Monogram Tank kits. I think I built enough of their Panzer IV's , to make a company of tanks. I also thought their Stug IV , was great , at the time. Happy Modelling! And how can I forget their Jagdpanzer IV , with moulded on zimmerit!

They are good kits, but if you don't like to fill gaps and seams, go with higher value or newer kits.

Sorry, I should have been more distinct. I'm going to build them in 1/72. I was just curious about the quality of the kits. The prices are very low-around five bucks. What do you got to lose right? I think I might buy a few after reading all the comments. I’m just looking for a good kit to practice that’s not a huge challenge. I don’t want the kit to go together easy but not too hard. Is Airfix the right choice? And if it is the right choice what Airfix kit’s I should stand clear from?

Hello!
I have built some Airfix , 1/76 , 1/72 , scale armor . I my favories were the Crusader Tank , and the 88 mm. gun with tractor . These kits can be hard to find . But I think Airfix has re-released some of these. With the older Airfix kits be patient , they can build into nice kits .Newer kits by Hasegawa , may be better.

A less than stellar kit can also be challenge.Add a lot of spare track, stowage, carve it up a bit to show battle damage then give it a killer paint job.Make it look like a $15 or $20 kit.
