I actually had time to finish a model!!
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 1:09 AM
It has been a while, but here is a project I started in August. This is the Tamiya kit from OIF. I will add antennas later and I am probably going to add some crew items as well. I wanted to get a dusty effect, so I washed with light colors, and drybrushed with dark colors. Let me know if you guys think the technique worked. A couple more pics can be found on my website if you guys are interested.

I hope you guys enjoy the pics. Please feel free to let me know if you have any suggestions, or criticisms.

Wow, reversing the wash and drybrush! Brilliant! It does seem to give a very good dusty appearance. Well done!

Nice, light wash, dark drybrush. A very interesting technique, and one that seems to have worked very well. If anything, may I suggest a more 'classical' darker wash to go into panel lines and all the nooks and crannies on the upper hull, in conjunction with your own techniques. Some of the panels just look a little 'flat' Smile [:)]

Looks like a nice build. I personally don't like the washed out look of it. If it supposed to look dusty, the dust is too white. I prefer a more yellow dusty color, especially if it is supposed to be in Iraq. The dust/sand/dirt there is more of an orange-yellow color. I agree with Zokissima on the panels, some look jus too lifeless. Some areas of adrker washing would be good.

I would have said it was an effective weathering job, but I can't argue with people who know more about the vehicle than I do. Still, it's a nice build.

I really think the overall build is pretty nice, and I like the dusted affect but, it does need too have a bit more contrast too give it more definition. As Gino stated, the dust as nicely as you did it needs too be a bit more yellow from what I've seen in my DAV and VFW magizine articles. You did a good job though and thank you for sharing with us it allows us all too learn. Semper Fi, mike

Looks different and unique! Might need some darker wash for a little more depth but if that's the way you like it...it's fine with me, Edog. Good job.

Thanks for the comments guys, I value them all. Overall, I am rather pleased with the weathering, but might try more drybushing, and a little less washing next time.

Zokissima good point about the need for a darker wash in the panel lines. I have an Abrams that I am finishing up now, and I will give it a try.

Jason, about the timeā€¦ well it took me almost 4 months to slap this thing together. And it really was slapped together. The secret is to slap as fast as possible and try to salvage it with the paint job!! LOL

Gino and Mike, thanks for the feedback guys. You two are absolutely right about the color of the dust. Actually, from all the photos I have seen of US AFVs in Iraq, I can barely make out any dust because the paint matches so well. I was trying to use my artistic license to create the illusion of dust and was scared that it would not show up if I made it 100% accurate. Next time I will try to make it more orange and see how it works. As I stated above, I will also try to add a pinwash in the panel lines next time for more contrast. Thanks again guys

Dwight, another wash is probably a good idea in the panel lines for depth. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks again guys.

Looks great to me, Eric. Very nice build, as always.

Was it you doing the Pz IV group, or was it your brother Erock?? Been working on mine. Got 3 hooks to get on the turret, then the shurtzen brackets and it will be ready to paint.

Have a good day.
