My Willys Jeep in progress pics.
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, November 18, 2004 12:18 PM

Well, here is my latest project, almost ready for a good wash and a paint job. Please let me know what I have goofed up before I go further. I used pretty much all the PE from the Aber set and Tamiya's fabulous Willy's jeep kit #219. Also, I scratch built a few little odds and ends, the post for the gun for one and the wiper motors. I also used an Academy gas can and bag from a vrlinden set. Also, I broke the shifter and had to make that as well. I have been working on this for awhile and am kinda sick of it. It is for the Battle of the Bulge GB and will have smow that will cover some of my flubs. As always, your comments and critism is appreciated. Keep in mind, that this is only as historically accurate as these kits and a couple of photos will allow me to be.

Thanks,

Ted

Well, I'll throw in myMy 2 cents [2c]worth. I have some old books on the "Bulge" and some of the jeep pics are rathering interesting. Some Jeeps have tow bars on the front, and some have what I believe they called a "fence buster". It's a piece of angle iron welded to the bumper. One picture shows what they called a "Mud Shoe". It looks like it is the same width as the tire and bolts to the wheel. They welded cleats around the piece to give the jeeps better traction. I wish I could describe it better as it would really add something to the model. I may have to try that myself. I'll be looking for the pics of the finished model.Whistling [:-^]

Medals are not "Won", they are "Earned".

i thought those "fence busters" were also used to keep drivers and passengers from getting decapitated by trap wires strung up...........

mm23t, I have those parts, either the tandom tow bar and the fence buster, but I left them off cuz I am trying to do a Band of Brothers dio and the jeep in it doesn't have these features. I did have to fight the urge to add the tow bar. Aber includes and excellent one. Thanks for all kind words. I will keep you posted.

Super job Ted. Looks like you've got a pretty good handle on the use of PE and your scratch built items are very well done also. This is going to be a terrific jeep. Can't wait to see the finished job. Semper Fi, mike

Those PE parts and all the extras you've done really enhance the little Jeeper. Good luck on the finish.

Nice lookin' jeep so far!

A couple of things to look out for:

First, I'm not sure what your kit instructions say, but my 1/24 scale kit instructions say to paint the engine and transmission grey. If you plan to show the engine, paint it Olive Drab unless you're going for a "This jeep haas been rebuilt at least once using whatever jeep parts we could find" look. Ford made jeeps as well, and they painted their engines grey. Willys painted theirs O.D.

Second, the machinegun mount should have a couple of T-stock supports bolted ot the floor about midway between the footrests and the rear seat supports. This is how it should look:

Hope this helps; sweet jeep!

Ack! I can't believe I missed this! There's also a short T-stock support attached between the seats. Right here:
