Best Tiger I kit
Posted by ga.retread on Friday, November 19, 2004 11:06 PM
I feel the need to add another "big cat" to my menagerie, but I can't decide which one to get. Aside from the new Tamiya kit, which is a little out of my price range right now, who makes the better kit?
Or should I just wait til I can get the new Taiya? Is it really worth the higher price?Confused [%-)]

Check out Dragon's new Tiger I Late, comes with lots of goodies like an aluminum barrel, indy tracks and more. They are releasing an early version too. All for much less than Tamiya's. Greatmodels will probably offer for well under $30 when available.

The Tamiya kits are really nice- great fit. The Academy is very close and comes with a full interior. You really can't go wrong with either (FYI- the $90 Tamiya version comes with metal tracks. Their cheaper ones have rubber band tracks)

The Academy kit comes with the one piece tracks. I am thinking of going with some of the metal ones on mine.

Hello!
I like the Academy Tiger with the interior , my personal favorite . It has flexibility in reguards to the application of Zimmerit . I did not apply it to mine. How ever the Tamiya Tigers are good . I have their Early Tiger , and several Late Tigers. Happy Modelling.

One of the best Tiger 1 kits about is the Tamiya Initial production kit, oob it goes to gether well and looks good.

I believe that the Academy Tiger 1 with interior has indy links .

You sure about that Chris? The Academy Tiger I Full Interior (Early) that I built earlier this year had the indy links, no rubberband. I know on the Academy Stuart they gave both rubberband and indy links, not sure if they are doing the same with the Tiger I.

I'd go for the Academy kit with the interior. It's a great kit. I just picked one up from Udisco here in Montreal for $38.00 Cdn. You can order online from them, too.

How is the Tamiya kit #35216? Any comments on this one? I put together the academy #1386 early tiger, but this one I wanted to get a little detailed with, PE parts, eduard barrel etc...Is it pretty decent?

I got the regular early kit, Fruil tracks, Eduard PE and an Aber barrel for around $90 total, so you maybe able to build your own "superkit" for less that Tamiya's package. as for the Academy kit, 1386 Early Tiger has the Rubber bands and kit 1348, also Early (with interior), has indies.

I have the mid version BIll and it only comes with the one piece. It does have one small sprue of indies though I guess for the spares. Looks like they got cheap with the mid kit.

Hey, I really appreciate everyone's input. I knew I would get a lot of response when I posted this topic.

Now all I have to do is go to my LHS, gather up all of the kits in question, and then make my decision. I let you guys know the results of the lottery as soon as they are in.

Once again, mucho thanks for all the input.

I own just one big cat, and I'm fairly happy with the Academy Tiger I with full interior.

This is one of the reasons why I still view Academy with a high level of mistrust when it comes to the detail items of their kits. Lack of consistency. I can't fathom why they would give indys in the Early and rubber band in the Mid unless they are two different molds that they picked up from somewhere else and couldn't be bothered with to modify...
